Far to the east, across the great sea, there was a mountain called the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. On its top stood a huge stone, which had soaked up the light of the sun and the moon since the beginning of the world. One day the stone cracked open with a sound like thunder, and out rolled a stone egg. The wind blew on the egg, and it became a monkey. When he opened his eyes, two beams of golden light shot up into the sky, so bright that they were seen in the palace of Heaven.
In Heaven, the Jade Emperor, ruler of all the gods, looked down and saw the little stone monkey. "It is only a creature born of heaven and earth," he said. "There is nothing to worry about." He had no idea how much trouble this monkey would one day give him.
The stone monkey lived happily with the other monkeys, eating fruit and playing in the streams. One hot day, they followed a stream up to a tall waterfall. "Whoever can go through that waterfall and come back unhurt will be our king," said the monkeys. The stone monkey jumped straight through the falling water. Behind it he found a wide, dry cave with stone beds, stone bowls, and a bridge of iron. He led all the monkeys inside, and they made him their king, the Handsome Monkey King.
For hundreds of years he ruled happily. But one day, at a great feast, he suddenly began to cry. "We are happy now," he said, "but one day we will grow old and die." An old monkey told him that there were wise masters in the world who knew the secret of living forever. The Monkey King made up his mind at once. He built a raft, sailed across the sea, and searched for years until he found such a master in a cave deep in the mountains.
The master gave him a name: Sun Wukong, which means "the one who understands emptiness." For years, Wukong swept floors, carried water, and listened to lessons. He was so clever that the master secretly taught him great magic. He learned to change into seventy-two different forms, from a tree to a bird to a fish. He also learned the cloud somersault. With a single jump, he could fly a hundred and eight thousand li, which is many thousands of miles.
But Wukong loved to show off. One day he turned himself into a pine tree in front of the other students, and they all cheered. The master was angry. "Power like this makes enemies," he said. "Go home, and never tell anyone that I was your teacher."
So Wukong returned to his mountain. Now he wanted a weapon worthy of a king. He dived to the bottom of the Eastern Sea and visited the palace of the Dragon King. The dragon showed him swords and spears, but they were all too light.
At last the Dragon King's wife whispered, "In our treasure house there is an iron pillar that once held the sea in place. Lately it has been glowing. Perhaps it is waiting for him."
Wukong lifted the pillar easily. "Smaller!" he said, and it shrank into a staff with a golden band at each end. "Smaller!" he said again, and it became as tiny as a needle. He tucked it behind his ear and went home laughing.
Not long after, Wukong fell asleep after a party, and two strange men tied up his spirit and dragged it down to the Underworld. "Your time is up," they said. Wukong was furious. He pulled out his staff, fought his way into the hall of the judges of the dead, and demanded to see the Book of Life and Death. He found his own name, took a brush, and crossed it out. Then, for good measure, he crossed out the names of all his monkeys too.
Complaints poured into Heaven from the Dragon King and the judges of the dead. The Jade Emperor wanted to send an army, but an old adviser had a better idea. "Invite the monkey to Heaven and give him a job," he said. "Then we can keep an eye on him."
So Wukong was brought to Heaven and made Keeper of the Heavenly Horses. He was delighted. He worked day and night, and the horses grew fat and happy.
Then one day he asked the other officials how important his job was. They laughed. "It is the lowest job in Heaven," they said. Wukong's face turned red. He kicked over his desk, pulled out his staff, and flew straight home. Back on his mountain, he raised a great flag and gave himself a new title: the Great Sage Equal to Heaven.
The Jade Emperor sent an army of heavenly soldiers to bring him back, but Wukong beat their generals one after another. In the end, Heaven had to make peace. They let Wukong keep the title he wanted, and they gave him a fine house and a job that seemed harmless: guarding the Garden of Peaches. But these were no ordinary peaches. Some of them ripened only once in nine thousand years, and anyone who ate one would live as long as heaven and earth.
Guarding peaches was the worst possible job for a monkey. Whenever no one was looking, Wukong climbed the trees and ate the biggest, ripest peaches. Then he heard that the Queen Mother of the West was holding a great Peach Banquet. Every god and immortal was invited. Everyone except him.
Wukong did not wait for an invitation. He used his magic to put the servants to sleep and slipped into the banquet hall before any of the guests arrived. The tables were covered with fine dishes and jars of heavenly wine. He ate and drank until he could hardly stand.
On his way home, he lost his way and wandered into the palace of Laozi, the oldest and wisest of the immortals. There, on a table, stood five gourds full of golden pills that could make anyone live forever. Wukong ate every one of them, as if they were roasted beans.
Suddenly he became sober and realized what he had done. "This time I have gone too far," he said, and he fled back to his mountain. Heaven was in an uproar. This time the Jade Emperor sent a hundred thousand soldiers, and they surrounded the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit like a net. Wukong pulled out a handful of his hairs, chewed them, and blew them out, and each hair turned into a copy of himself. Thousands of Monkey Kings fought thousands of soldiers, and still Heaven could not win.
At last the gods called on Erlang, the Jade Emperor's nephew, a great warrior with a third eye in his forehead. The two fought for hundreds of rounds. When Wukong changed into a sparrow, Erlang became a hawk. When Wukong became a fish, Erlang became a fish-eating bird. In the end, Laozi dropped a magic ring from the clouds, and it struck Wukong on the head. He fell, Erlang's dog caught him by the leg, and at last the Monkey King was tied up.
But no one could punish him. Swords bounced off his neck, and lightning only tickled him. He had eaten so many peaches and pills that his body had become as hard as diamond. "Leave him to me," said Laozi. He threw Wukong into the furnace where he made his pills and kept the fire burning for forty-nine days.
On the forty-ninth day, Laozi opened the lid, expecting to find a pile of ashes. Out jumped Wukong, as lively as ever. The only change was in his eyes. The smoke had made them red, and now they burned with a golden fire that could see through any disguise. He kicked over the furnace, pulled out his staff, and fought his way through Heaven toward the hall of the Jade Emperor himself.
In despair, the Jade Emperor sent a message to the far west, to the Buddha. The Buddha came, calm and smiling, and spoke to the angry monkey. "Why do you make so much trouble?" he asked. "Because I am strong enough to rule Heaven," said Wukong. "The Jade Emperor should move out and let me sit on his throne."
The Buddha laughed softly. "Let us make a bet," he said, and he held out his right hand. "If you can jump out of my palm with one somersault, the throne of Heaven is yours. If you cannot, you will go back down to earth and learn to behave."
Wukong could hardly believe his luck. "One somersault takes me a hundred and eight thousand li," he thought, "and this palm is not even a foot wide." He jumped onto the Buddha's hand.
With one great leap, he shot away like a streak of light. He flew and flew until he saw five tall pink pillars standing in a sea of mist. "This must be the end of the world," he said to himself. To prove that he had been there, he turned one of his hairs into a brush and wrote on the middle pillar, "The Great Sage Equal to Heaven was here." And, being a monkey, he left another, less polite mark at the foot of the pillar before he somersaulted back to the Buddha's palm.
"I went to the end of the world and came back," he said proudly. "Now give me the throne." "You foolish monkey," said the Buddha. "You never left my hand."
Wukong looked down. There, on the Buddha's middle finger, were the words he had written, the ink still wet. And at the bottom of the finger, there was a faint smell of monkey.
"Impossible!" cried Wukong. "I will go and look again!"
But before he could jump, the Buddha turned his hand over and pushed him out of the gate of Heaven. As the hand came down to earth, its five fingers became five mountains joined together, and they landed on top of the Monkey King. This was the Mountain of the Five Elements. Only Wukong's head and hands stuck out from under it.
There the mighty Monkey King stayed. When he was hungry, the local spirits fed him iron pills, and when he was thirsty, they gave him melted copper to drink. Five hundred years passed. Then one day, it is said, a monk came along the road on his way to the far west, and the adventures of Sun Wukong began again. But that is another story.
