Old Anthony Rockwall was very rich. He had made his money from Rockwall's Eureka Soap, and now he lived in a large house on Fifth Avenue. Anthony believed one thing above everything else: money could buy anything.
One evening he called his son Richard into the library. Richard had just come home from college.
"Richard," said Anthony, "you're a gentleman, and you don't waste money. But you have plenty to spend. Money is the answer to everything. It can buy anything you want."
"There are some things that money can't buy," said Richard sadly.
"Name one," said the old man.
Richard sighed. "Father, there is a girl. I love her very much. But I can't tell her."
"Ha!" cried Anthony. "You have money and good looks. Any girl would be happy to marry you. What's the problem?"
"Time," said Richard. "Her name is Miss Lantry. She is leaving for Europe the day after tomorrow, and she will stay there for two years. Every hour of her day is planned. Tomorrow evening I will meet her at Grand Central Station when her train comes in. Then I will drive her to the theater, where her mother and friends are waiting. It's only a six-minute ride. Can I ask her to marry me in six minutes? No. And after the theater, there will be no chance. Money can't buy one minute of time, Dad."
After Richard left, his Aunt Ellen came in. She was a gentle, kind woman, and Anthony told her about Richard's problem.
"Oh, Anthony," she said. "You always talk about money. Money can't help true love." Then she went to Richard and gave him an old gold ring. "This was your mother's," she said. "It's a lucky ring for love. Wear it tomorrow night."
The next evening Richard met Miss Lantry at the station. They got into a horse cab and started down Broadway. Richard was trying to put the ring on his little finger, but it slipped. It rolled across the floor of the cab and out into the street.
"Stop, driver!" he called. "I dropped a ring." He jumped out, found the ring, and got back in. It took less than a minute.
But in that minute everything changed. A big streetcar stopped in front of the cab. Wagons came from the left. A furniture van and a beer truck came from the right. Cabs and carriages filled every space. Policemen shouted, horses stamped, and drivers waved their whips. The street was completely blocked. Nobody could move forward or back.
"I'm so sorry," said Richard. "We're stuck. It might be an hour."
Miss Lantry looked at the long lines of traffic. "Well," she said with a smile, "I don't really care about the theater anyway."
That night Aunt Ellen came to Anthony with a happy face. "They are going to be married!" she said. "On the way to the theater there was a terrible traffic jam. They were stuck for two hours, and in that time Richard asked her, and she said yes. It was the ring, Anthony. True love did it. Money had nothing to do with it."
"I'm glad the boy got what he wanted," said Anthony, and he went back to his newspaper.
The next day a man named Kelly came to Anthony's house. Anthony took out his checkbook.
"Well, Kelly," he said, "how much was it?"
"It wasn't cheap," said Kelly. "I paid the wagon drivers and cab drivers five dollars each. The truck drivers wanted ten. The policemen cost the most. But wasn't it beautiful, Mr. Rockwall? Everybody arrived at exactly the right time, and nobody could move for two hours."
Anthony wrote a check and handed it to him. "Here's your money, and a thousand dollars more for you," he said. "You don't hate money, do you, Kelly?"
"Me? No, sir," said Kelly with a grin.
As Kelly was leaving, Anthony called him back. "Kelly, did you see a little fat boy with wings in the traffic? A boy shooting arrows with a bow?"
Kelly thought for a moment. "No, sir," he said. "I didn't see anybody like that. If he was there, maybe the police took him away before I arrived."
"I thought the little rascal wasn't there," said Anthony, and he laughed. "Good-bye, Kelly."
