Long, long ago, before there were any cities or kings, the world belonged to the gods. They lived on top of Mount Olympus, and their king was Zeus, the god of the sky and thunder. But there was another family of great beings called the Titans. One of them was named Prometheus, and his name means "the one who thinks ahead."
Zeus gave Prometheus and his brother, Epimetheus, an important job. "Go down to the Earth," Zeus said, "and make living creatures to fill it." Prometheus took some wet clay from the side of a river. Carefully, he shaped it into a small figure that stood on two legs and looked up at the sky. That was the first human being. Then the brothers made many more animals and people.
Next, they had to give each creature a gift to help it live. Epimetheus said, "Let me do this part, brother. It will be easy." His name means "the one who thinks afterward," and that was exactly the kind of person he was. He gave the lion sharp teeth. He gave the bird wings and the turtle a hard shell. He gave the rabbit fast legs and the bear a thick, warm coat. He was so happy and so busy that he did not stop to count.
At last, the humans came to him. Epimetheus looked into his bag, and his face went white. "Oh no," he said. "There is nothing left." The people had no fur, no claws, and no wings. They were weaker than every other animal. In winter they shook with cold in dark caves, and at night they were afraid of the wolves.
Prometheus felt sorry for the people he had made. He loved them like his own children. "There is one gift that can save them," he thought. "Fire." With fire, people could cook their food, keep warm, and make tools. With fire, they could make light in the dark. But fire belonged to the gods, and Zeus had said, "Fire is not for humans. Never give it to them."
Prometheus thought about this for a long time. Then one night he quietly climbed Mount Olympus. He carried a fennel stalk, a tall plant which is empty inside. When he reached the fire of the gods, he pushed a small, burning piece of wood into the stalk. The plant hid the flame perfectly. Nobody saw him as he hurried back down the mountain.
He went from cave to cave and showed people how to make fire and how to keep it. Soon the dark Earth was full of little lights. People cooked meat and baked bread. They made pots and metal tools. Prometheus also taught them to read the stars and to count. Little by little, humans became stronger and wiser.
One evening, Zeus looked down from Olympus and saw the fires shining everywhere. His face turned dark with anger. "Prometheus!" he shouted, and the sky shook. "You have stolen from the gods!"
The punishment of Prometheus was terrible. Zeus had him carried to a high, cold mountain at the end of the world. There he was chained to a rock with chains that could never be broken. Every day a great eagle came to attack him, and every night his body healed again, so his pain never ended. Still, Prometheus did not say he was sorry. "I gave mankind a gift," he said. "I would do it again."
For many years he stayed on that mountain. Then one day, the hero Heracles walked past on one of his long journeys. He saw the Titan on the rock and the eagle in the sky. Heracles took his bow and shot the eagle down. Then, with his great strength, he broke the chains. Prometheus was free at last.
Today, people still remember him. When we light a candle or turn on a stove, we use the gift he brought. Fire changed the life of mankind forever, and it came from one who was brave enough to think ahead.
