When Yuto started junior high school, his parents gave him his first smartphone. He was very excited. He joined a group chat with his classmates, made an account on a social media app, and started to post photos. But one evening, something strange happened.
He got a message from someone he did not know. "Hi! I saw your photo. You go to Sakura Junior High, right? I live near there, too. Let's meet!"
Yuto was surprised. How did this person know his school? Then he looked at his photo again. The name of his school was on his bag in the picture.
Many young people have the same kind of experience. When we post on the internet, many people can see it, not only our friends. A photo can show a lot of personal information, like your face, your school uniform, the name of a station, or even your house. Once a photo is online, other people can copy it and share it. It is very hard to delete it completely.
So here is the first rule: do not write personal information online. This means your full name, your address, your phone number, and the name of your school. Be careful with photos, too. Before you post one, look at the background. Is there anything that shows where you live or study?
The second rule is to check who can see your posts. Most social media apps have privacy settings. You can choose "public," so everyone can see your posts. Or you can choose "private," so only people you accept can see them. Yuto changed his account to private, and he only accepted friend requests from people he really knew.
The third rule is about passwords. Every year, a security company makes a list of the most common passwords in the world. Very easy ones, like the numbers "one, two, three, four, five, six" or the word "password," are often near the top. Computers can guess passwords like these in less than a second. A good password is long and hard to guess. It is also a good idea to use a different password for each app, and never to tell it to anyone, even your best friend.
Many apps also have two-step verification. When you log in on a new phone, the app sends you a special number, and you must type it in. Then, even if someone learns your password, it is hard for them to use your account. Finally, if you get a strange message, do not answer it. Tell your parents or a teacher. You are not in trouble, and they can help you.
Yuto did not answer the stranger. He showed the message to his mother, and they blocked the account together. Then he deleted the photo and posted a new one, a picture of his cat. "My cat can be famous," he said, "but my school will stay a secret."
What do you think? Some people say that young students should not use social media, because it is too easy to share personal information by mistake. Others say that students should be allowed to use it, because they can learn to use the internet safely, and it is a good way to talk with friends.
