It was evening in the mountains. A wolf was walking slowly along a rocky path. He was thin and hungry, and he was feeling a little sad. He had not caught anything all day.
The sun was going down behind him. It was big and orange, and it was very low in the sky. The wolf looked down at the ground in front of him, and he stopped. There was his shadow. But it was not his usual shadow. It was enormous! It stretched across the whole hill. It was as long as ten trees.
"Look at that!" said the wolf. "Look how big I am!" He moved his head, and the shadow's huge head moved too. He lifted a paw, and the shadow lifted a giant paw.
"I never knew I was so huge," said the wolf. He stood up taller. He began to feel very proud. "I am bigger than a horse. I am bigger than a bear. I am bigger than a house! Why was I ever afraid of the lion? The lion is tiny next to me!"
He walked on, watching his shadow. The more he looked at it, the bigger he felt. "In fact," he said, "why is the lion the king of the animals? That is silly. I am much bigger than he is. I should be the king! Tomorrow, I will go and tell all the animals. They will bow down to me, and the lion will run away when he sees me."
He was enjoying these proud thoughts so much that he did not hear a quiet sound behind a rock. He did not see two golden eyes watching him.
Suddenly, a lion jumped out from behind the rock and knocked him down. The wolf looked up at the lion's big face and sharp teeth. The lion was much, much bigger than him.
"But, but, I am huge!" said the wolf. "Look at my shadow!"
The lion laughed a deep laugh. "Your shadow is big because the sun is low," he said. "Shadows always grow long in the evening. But you are still the same small wolf."
The wolf looked at the ground. The sun had gone down now, and his giant shadow was gone. "Oh, what a fool I am," he said. "I believed that I was big, and that is why I was not careful."
The lion was not very hungry that evening. "Go home, little wolf," he said, and he let him go. The wolf ran all the way home, and he never looked at his shadow in the same way again.
