Sir Hugo was a knight, and he was a very cheerful man. He was kind and brave, and everyone liked him. But Sir Hugo had one small secret. He did not have any hair on his head. He was completely bald.
When he was young, he had thick brown hair. But slowly, year by year, it fell out. Now his head was as smooth as an egg. So Sir Hugo bought a wig. It was made of curly brown hair, and it looked very real. Every morning, he put on his wig and then his hat with a big red feather.
One fine spring day, Sir Hugo went hunting with his friends. There were about ten of them, all riding on beautiful horses. They were riding across the open fields, talking and joking.
Suddenly, a strong wind came across the field. It was so strong that it pulled Sir Hugo's hat right off his head. And the wig went with it! The hat and the wig flew up into the air together. Then the wind carried them away over the trees.
Everyone stopped. They all looked at Sir Hugo's head. It was bald and shining in the sun like a mirror. For a moment, nobody said anything. Then one friend began to laugh. Then another friend laughed, and soon they were all laughing loudly. Some of them were laughing so hard that they almost fell off their horses.
Sir Hugo's face turned red. He could get angry. He could ride home and hide. But he did not do either of these things. Instead, he started to laugh too. He laughed louder than anyone.
"Well, my friends," he said, "why are you so surprised? That hair was not even mine! It was the hair of another man. That hair left its first owner's head. So why should it stay on my head?"
His friends laughed even more, but now they were laughing with him, not at him. "Sir Hugo," said one of them, "you are the best man in the world!"
They spent the rest of the day looking for the wig. At last, they found it high up in a tree. A bird was sitting in it, and it was already starting to build a nest. Sir Hugo looked up at the bird and smiled. "Keep it, little friend," he said. "You need it more than I do."
