Long ago, there was a rich town with high walls around it. One day, the people woke up and saw something terrible. A huge enemy army was outside the walls. There were thousands of soldiers, and they were getting ready to attack.
The mayor called everyone to a big meeting in the town hall. "My friends," he said, "we are in great danger. We need a plan to protect our town. Does anyone have a good idea?"
First, a builder stood up. He was a big man with strong hands, and he had red dust on his clothes. "Bricks!" he said loudly. "There is nothing better than bricks. We must build our walls higher and thicker with bricks. Then no enemy can break them. I can start work today. Of course, you will need to buy a lot of bricks from me."
Some people nodded. But then a carpenter stood up. "Bricks? No, no," he said. "Wood is the answer! Wood is strong and light. We can build tall wooden towers on the walls, and big wooden gates. Our soldiers can stand on the towers and see the enemy coming. I have plenty of good wood in my shop. I can give you a nice price."
The people began to talk to each other. "Bricks or wood? Wood or bricks?" Nobody was sure.
Then a leather worker jumped to his feet. He was a small, thin man, and he was waving a big piece of brown leather. "Friends, friends! Listen to me!" he cried. "You are both wrong. Bricks break, and wood burns. But leather! Nothing in the world is as good as leather! We will cover the walls with leather. We will cover the gates with leather. We will make leather coats for every soldier. And it just happens that I have the best leather in town!"
Then all three men began to shout at the same time. "Bricks!" "Wood!" "Leather!" Soon everyone in the hall was shouting too.
The mayor put his head in his hands. He understood now. Each man was not thinking about the town at all. Each man was only thinking about his own work and his own money.
At that moment, a young girl at the back of the hall said, "Excuse me. What if we do all three?" The room went quiet. Then, slowly, the mayor began to smile.
