It was a quiet autumn morning in the forest. The leaves were red and yellow, and the sun was warm. All the animals were relaxing, except for one. A big wild boar was standing under an old oak tree, and he was rubbing his tusks against the trunk. Scrape, scrape, scrape.
A fox was lying in the sun nearby. She opened one eye and watched him for a while. Then she sat up. "Excuse me," she said. "What are you doing?"
"I am sharpening my tusks," said the boar. Scrape, scrape.
The fox looked around. She listened carefully. She heard birds singing and leaves falling. That was all. "But why?" she asked. "There are no hunters today. There are no dogs. Nobody is going to attack you. It is a beautiful day. Why are you working so hard?"
"I am getting ready," said the boar.
The fox began to laugh. "Getting ready for what? You are a funny animal! Come and lie in the sun with me. When the hunters come, then you can sharpen your tusks."
The boar stopped for a moment and looked at her. "When the hunters come," he said, "I will not have time to sharpen my tusks. I will need to use them. If I wait until danger is here, it will be too late."
The fox shook her head and lay down again. "Well, I am going to enjoy this lovely day," she said, and she closed her eyes.
The boar went back to work. Scrape, scrape, scrape. He worked all morning, until his tusks were white and very sharp.
In the afternoon, a sound came through the trees. It was the sound of dogs barking. Then there were men's voices. Hunters were coming!
The fox jumped up in a hurry. She had no plan, so she ran this way and that way, looking for a place to hide. At last, she found a small hole and pushed herself into it. She was shaking with fear.
But the boar did not run. When the first dog came near, he lowered his head and showed his sharp tusks. The dog stopped and stepped back. The other dogs stopped too. Not one of them wanted to fight him. Soon the hunters called their dogs, and they went away to look for an easier animal.
Later, the fox came out of her hole, covered with dirt. The boar was standing calmly under his tree. "Now you see," he said, "why I was getting ready."
