It was a very hot summer day. The great lion was tired, so he went into his cool den and lay down. Soon he was sleeping deeply, and his loud snores were shaking the stones.
A little mouse was looking for food that day. She ran into the den without thinking. When she saw the big lion, she was not afraid, because he was sleeping. "This is a fun mountain," she said. She ran up his leg and along his back. She played in his soft mane. Then she ran across his nose and pulled one of his long whiskers.
"Achoo!" The lion woke up with a big sneeze. He jumped to his feet and shook his head. "Who did that?" he roared. "Who was running on my face?"
The mouse quickly ran into a small hole in the corner. The lion did not see her, but he knew that it was a mouse. He began to look everywhere. He looked behind the rocks. He looked under the leaves. He put his huge nose into every corner of the den. He was so angry that his tail was moving from side to side.
At that moment, a fox was walking past the den. She stopped and watched the lion. Then she began to laugh. "Oh, this is wonderful!" she said. "The King of the Animals is afraid of a tiny mouse! Wait until I tell everyone in the forest."
The lion turned and looked at the fox with his golden eyes. The fox stopped laughing very quickly.
"Afraid?" said the lion in a deep voice. "I am not afraid of that mouse. She is smaller than one of my teeth. I could stop her with one paw."
"Then why are you so angry?" asked the fox.
"Because she ran over my face while I was sleeping," said the lion. "She pulled my whiskers. She did not ask. She did not say sorry. She showed no respect at all. A small thing can be very rude, my friend. And I will not let anyone be rude to me, small or big."
The fox nodded and said nothing more. She walked away quietly, and she was very polite to the lion after that day. And the little mouse? She stayed in her hole until the lion went to sleep again, and then she ran home and never came back.
