Long, long ago, there lived an old bamboo cutter. Every day he went into the bamboo forest to cut bamboo, and he made baskets and other useful things from it. He and his wife had no children, and their life was quiet and simple.
One evening, he noticed that one piece of bamboo was shining with a soft golden light. Surprised, he cut it open carefully. Inside, there was a tiny girl who was no bigger than his thumb. She was smiling up at him.
"You must be a gift from heaven," he said. He carried her home in his hands, and his wife was overjoyed. They decided to raise her as their own daughter.
After that day, something strange happened. Whenever the old man cut bamboo, he found gold inside it. Soon the poor family became rich. The little girl also grew very quickly. In just three months, she became a young woman. She was more beautiful than anyone in the land, and the house seemed to fill with light when she was there. They named her Kaguya-hime, the Shining Princess.
News of her beauty spread across the country. Many men came to see her, and five noble princes asked to marry her. Kaguya-hime did not want to marry anyone. So she gave each prince a task that was almost impossible.
"Please bring me the stone bowl that the Buddha used," she said to the first prince. To the second, she said, "Bring me a branch from the magic island of Horai, with roots of silver, a trunk of gold, and fruits of white jewels." The others were asked to bring a robe made from the fur of a fire rat that could not burn, a shining jewel from a dragon's neck, and a shell that was hidden in a swallow's nest.
The princes tried in many ways, but none of them was successful. One brought an old bowl from a temple and pretended that it was the Buddha's. Another paid craftsmen to make a beautiful fake branch, but the craftsmen came to the house to ask for their money, so everyone found out. One prince went out to sea to find a dragon, but he was caught in a terrible storm and came home sick. In the end, all five went away in shame.
At last, even the Emperor heard about Kaguya-hime. He visited her and fell in love with her. But she said, "I cannot marry you. I am sorry." Still, they wrote letters and poems to each other for three years, and they became close friends.
One summer, Kaguya-hime began to look up at the moon every night with tears in her eyes. Her parents were worried. "What is wrong, my dear?"
Finally, she told them the truth. "I am not from this world. I came from the Capital of the Moon. On the night of the next full moon, my people will come to take me back. I do not want to leave you, but I have no choice."
The old man told the Emperor, who sent two thousand soldiers to protect the house. They stood on the roof and around the garden with their bows and arrows. Kaguya-hime was hidden in the deepest room, and her mother held her tightly.
When the full moon rose, the night became brighter than day. A cloud came down from the sky, carrying people dressed in shining robes. The soldiers tried to shoot their arrows, but their arms became weak and they could not move. All the doors opened by themselves.
Before she left, Kaguya-hime wrote a letter to the Emperor. She gave him a small jar of medicine that could make a person live forever. Then a moon person put a robe of feathers on her shoulders. As soon as she wore it, she forgot all her sadness and all her memories of the earth. She got into the flying carriage and rose up into the sky.
The Emperor read her letter many times. "What is the use of living forever without her?" he said. He ordered his men to take the medicine to the highest mountain in Japan, the one that was closest to the moon, and burn it there.
People say that smoke still rose from the top of that mountain for many years. And they say that is why it is called Fuji, the mountain of never dying.
