One spring day, a shepherd was walking near the edge of a forest. Suddenly, he heard a small crying sound. He looked under a bush and found a baby wolf. It was alone, and it was very hungry.
The shepherd picked it up. "My neighbors would kill you," he said. "But I have a better idea. You can be useful to me." He took the wolf cub home and gave it milk and meat.
The cub grew bigger and stronger every month. He was a very clever young wolf. When he was old enough, the shepherd began to teach him. "Listen," he said. "Do you see the sheep on the next hill? They belong to my neighbor. Go there at night when the dogs are sleeping. Bring me back a fat lamb, and you will get some of the meat."
The wolf learned quickly. He knew how to move without a sound. He knew how to stay out of the moonlight. Night after night, he went to the neighbors' farms, and he came back with a lamb. The shepherd's neighbors were very worried. "Where are our lambs going?" they said. But the shepherd only smiled.
Soon, the shepherd was getting rich. He sold the meat and the wool in the market. "This wolf is the best thing I ever found," he thought.
One evening, the shepherd and the wolf were sitting on the hill together. The sun was going down. Below them, the shepherd's own sheep were eating grass in the valley. There were hundreds of them, and they looked fat and soft.
"You are a very good student," said the shepherd. "You are the best thief in the country."
"Thank you," said the wolf. He was looking down at the sheep in the valley. "You were a very good teacher. You taught me to steal. You taught me that lambs are delicious. You taught me to take sheep that are not mine."
The shepherd laughed. "Yes, I did."
The wolf turned his yellow eyes to the shepherd. "Then you must watch your own flock very carefully from now on," he said. "Because I am a wolf. And a wolf does not care whose sheep they are."
The shepherd stopped laughing. That night, he did not sleep at all.
