Two frogs lived together in a small pond in the countryside. Their names were Pip and Pop. They swam all day, and they sang songs together all night. Life was happy and easy.
But one summer, there was no rain for a very long time. The sun was hot every day, and the pond was getting smaller and smaller. Soon there was only mud. Then even the mud became dry.
"We can't stay here," said Pip. "If we stay, we will die. We must find a new home."
So the two frogs left the pond and started hopping across the fields. The ground was hot under their feet. They were tired and thirsty. They hopped for hours, but they did not find any water.
At last, they came to an old stone well. Pip jumped up onto the edge and looked down. Far below, he could see cool, dark water. "Pop! Come and look!" he shouted. "Water! Lots of water! This is perfect!"
Pop jumped up and looked down too. The well was very deep. The water was a long way down, and the walls were straight and smooth.
"Let's jump in now," said Pip. "We can live down there. It is cool and quiet, and there is plenty of water. Nobody can catch us there. It will be our new home!"
Pip was getting ready to jump, but Pop put a hand on his arm. "Wait a minute," he said. "Think about it first."
"Think about what?" said Pip. "We are thirsty! There is water! What is there to think about?"
"Our pond was full of water once too," said Pop. "And then it dried up. What will happen if this well dries up one day? The walls are high and smooth. We can't climb them. How are we going to get out?"
Pip opened his mouth to answer, but then he closed it again. He looked down at the deep, dark water. Then he looked at the smooth walls. Suddenly, the well did not look so perfect.
"You are right," he said slowly. "Down there, we could never escape."
The two frogs climbed down from the well. They drank some water from a bucket next to it, and they rested in the shade. Then they hopped on together. Two days later, they found a wide, slow river with soft grass on both sides. And they lived there happily for many years.
