Felix was a young man who loved to spend money. When his father died, he left Felix a big house, a lot of land, and a box full of gold. But Felix did not know how to save money. He bought fine clothes and fast horses. He had big parties every night, with music and food for all his friends.
After a few years, all the gold was gone. Then the land was gone, and then the house. His "friends" disappeared too. Now Felix had only one thing left. It was a warm coat. It was thick and heavy, and it kept him warm on cold winter nights.
One morning, at the end of winter, Felix was walking by a pond. The air was still cold. But suddenly, he saw a small bird flying low over the water. It was a swallow! Its wings were dark blue, and it was singing happily.
"A swallow!" said Felix. "Swallows come back every year when the warm weather begins. That means winter is over. Summer is coming!"
He took off his heavy coat and looked at it. "I don't need this anymore," he thought. "Summer is coming, and it will be hot. I can sell this coat, and then I can buy food and wine. I am going to have a party tonight!"
So he went to the market and sold his coat. He bought bread, cheese, and wine, and he had a happy evening.
But a few days later, the weather changed. Winter came back. A cold wind came down from the mountains. The ponds froze, and snow fell on the roofs. Felix had no coat now. He walked through the streets, shaking and shivering. His hands were blue, and his teeth were making little noises.
Then he saw something lying in the snow. It was the little swallow. It was not moving. The poor bird had come too early, and the cold had killed it.
Felix looked down at the bird sadly. "Oh, little swallow," he said. "Why did you come so early? You thought that summer was here, and now look at you. And because of you, I believed it too. I sold my only coat. You have hurt yourself, and you have hurt me too."
But deep in his heart, Felix knew the truth. It was not the swallow's fault. "One little bird does not make a summer," he said to himself. "I should not believe something only because I want to believe it."
That spring, Felix found a job at a farm. He worked hard and saved his money. And the next winter, he bought a new coat, and he kept it until summer really came.
