This is a story I heard from an old man in my village when I was a child.
Long ago, near a small village, there lived a little fox called Gon. Gon had no family. He lived alone in a hole in the forest.
Day and night, Gon went into the village and played tricks on people. He dug up sweet potatoes in the fields. He set fire to dry grass that the farmers had left out. He pulled down the red peppers that were hanging behind the houses.
One autumn, it rained for three days. Gon stayed in his hole. When the rain stopped, he ran happily to the river. The water was high and brown.
A man was standing in the river, catching fish with a net. "That's Hyoju," Gon thought. Hyoju pulled up the net and put the fish into a basket. There was a big fat eel, too. Then he left the basket and walked away for a while.
Gon wanted to play a trick. He ran to the basket and threw the fish back into the river, one by one. Then he tried to take the eel, but it was too slippery. He put his head into the basket, and the eel wrapped itself around his neck.
"Hey, you thief fox!" Hyoju shouted. Gon jumped and ran away with the eel still around his neck. Near his hole, he pulled it off and left it on the grass.
About ten days later, Gon heard a bell ringing in the village. People in white were walking slowly to the graveyard. It was a funeral. Hyoju was at the front, carrying a small board with a dead person's name on it. His face was usually red and full of life, but today it looked very sad.
"Oh, it must be Hyoju's mother," Gon thought. That night, in his hole, he thought hard. "She was sick in bed, and she wanted to eat an eel. So Hyoju went to catch one. But I took it away. She died without eating it. I should not have played that trick."
Now Hyoju was alone, just like Gon. Gon wanted to do something for him. One day, he took some sardines from a sardine seller's basket and threw them into Hyoju's house.
The next day, Gon went to Hyoju's house with some chestnuts. Hyoju had a cut on his face. "Who threw those sardines into my house?" he was saying to himself. "The sardine seller thought I was a thief and hit me."
"Oh no," Gon thought. "Poor Hyoju." He quietly left the chestnuts by the door of Hyoju's shed. After that, he brought chestnuts every day. Sometimes he brought mushrooms, too.
One night under a bright moon, Gon heard Hyoju talking to his friend Kasuke. "Every day, someone leaves chestnuts and mushrooms at my house," Hyoju said. "It must be a god," said Kasuke. "A god feels sorry for you. You should thank the god every day."
Gon was not happy. "I bring the chestnuts, but he thanks a god, not me," he thought. But the next day, he brought chestnuts again.
Hyoju was working outside, and he saw a fox going into his house. "That's the fox who stole my eel! He is here to play another trick!" Hyoju took his gun, and when the fox came out, he shot it. Gon fell down.
Hyoju ran to him. Then he saw the chestnuts on the floor. "Gon," he said. "Was it you? Were you bringing me chestnuts every day?"
Gon closed his eyes and nodded. The gun fell from Hyoju's hands. Thin blue smoke was still coming out of it.
