One spring evening, a young man named Toshishun was standing under the west gate of Luoyang, the great capital of Tang China. He was once the son of a rich man, but now all his money was gone. He had nothing to eat and no place to sleep.
"What are you thinking about?" asked an old man who was blind in one eye. "I have no place to sleep tonight," said Toshishun. "Then stand in the evening sun," said the old man. "Tonight, dig where the head of your shadow falls. You will find a cart full of gold." Toshishun looked up in surprise, but the old man was gone.
Toshishun dug there and found a mountain of gold. He became the richest man in Luoyang and lived in luxury. Friends who never said hello before came to see him every day.
But after three years, all the money was gone, and so were his friends.
The old man came to him again at the gate. This time, the gold was under the chest of his shadow. But in three years, that money was gone too.
When the old man came for the third time, Toshishun said, "I don't want money anymore. When I'm rich, people are nice to me. When I'm poor, they don't even smile at me. I'm tired of people. You must be a sennin with magic powers. Please make me your student."
The old man smiled. "Yes, I am Tekkanshi, a sennin of Mount Gabi. Come with me." They sat on a bamboo stick, and it flew into the sky like a dragon.
On Mount Gabi, Tekkanshi sat Toshishun down on a big rock. "I am going to heaven for a while," he said. "Strange things will come and try to trick you. But don't say a word. If you speak, you can never become a sennin." "I won't say a word, even if I die," said Toshishun.
A tiger and a huge white snake came at him, but they disappeared like fog. A storm came and went. Then a tall god in gold armor appeared. "Who are you? Answer me!" Toshishun kept quiet. The angry god struck him with his spear, and Toshishun died.
His spirit went down to Hell. King Enma asked him, "Why were you sitting on Mount Gabi?" Toshishun did not answer. So demons threw him into a valley of fire, a sea of ice and other terrible places. Still, he did not say a word.
Then King Enma said, "Bring his father and mother!" A demon brought two thin horses with the faces of Toshishun's dead parents. "Answer me, or they will suffer," said the king. Toshishun stayed silent, and the demons began to hit the horses with iron whips.
Then he heard a soft voice. "Don't worry about us. If you can be happy, that is all we want. Don't speak if you don't want to." It was his mother. Even in such pain, she was thinking only of her son. Toshishun forgot Tekkanshi's words. He ran to her, held her neck and cried, "Mother!"
The next moment, Toshishun was standing under the west gate of Luoyang. The old man was smiling. "You can't become a sennin, can you?" "No, I can't," said Toshishun with tears in his eyes. "But I'm glad. I couldn't stay silent when my parents were in pain."
Tekkanshi's face became serious. "If you had said nothing, I was going to take your life. Now, what will you do?" "I will live an honest life, as a good human being," Toshishun answered in a clear, happy voice.
As he walked away, Tekkanshi turned back. "Oh, I have a house at the foot of Mount Taizan. It is yours, with its fields. The peach trees must be in flower all around it now," he added happily.
