Everyone, I am in Osaka now, so let me tell you a story about Osaka.
Long ago, a man came to Osaka to work as a servant. Nobody knows his real name. He came to cook rice, so he is just called Gonsuke, a common name for such servants.
Gonsuke went to a shop that found jobs for people. "I want to become a sennin," he said. "Please find me a job in a place like that." A sennin is a wise man in old Chinese stories who never grows old, never dies, and can even fly.
The man at the shop was too surprised to speak. "I'm sorry," he said at last, "but we have never found work for a sennin."
"That's strange," said Gonsuke. "Your sign says, 'Jobs of All Kinds.' Is your sign telling a lie?" The man at the shop could not say no. "All right. Please come back tomorrow."
But the man at the shop had no idea where to send him. So he asked a doctor nearby. The doctor's wife, a sly woman called "the Old Fox," said, "Send him to us. In two or three years, I will make him a sennin."
"What a foolish thing to say!" said the doctor. "What will you do when he complains?" His wife only laughed. "People who are too honest, like you, can't even eat in this hard world."
The next day, Gonsuke came in his best kimono, but he looked just like a farmer. "Why do you want to be a sennin?" asked the doctor. "When I saw Osaka Castle, I thought, even a great man like Toyotomi Hideyoshi had to die. Our lives are short, however rich we become."
"Then will you do any work to become a sennin?" asked the wife. "Yes, any work." "Then work for me for twenty years, and I will teach you. But I will not pay you even one coin." "Yes, yes. Thank you very much!"
For twenty years, Gonsuke carried water, cut wood, cooked rice, cleaned, and carried the doctor's medicine box. And he never asked for money. There was no more useful servant in all of Japan.
After twenty years, Gonsuke put on his best kimono again and thanked them. "Now please teach me how to become a sennin." The doctor was in trouble. "My wife knows the way. Ask her," he said, and he looked away.
But his wife was calm. "Do everything I say, however hard it is. Otherwise you will not become a sennin, and unless you work twenty more years without pay, you will be punished and die." Of course, she knew no magic. She planned to give him an impossible job and make him work for nothing again.
"Climb that pine tree in the garden," she said. Gonsuke climbed it. "Higher. Much higher." Soon he was at the top of the big pine. "Now let go with your right hand." Gonsuke held a branch with his left hand and let go with his right. "Now let go with your left hand too."
"Hey, hey!" said the doctor. "If he lets go, he will fall onto the stones and die!" "This is not your business," said his wife. "Now, let go with your left hand!"
Gonsuke let go. With both hands free, he had to fall. But he didn't! He stopped in the middle of the bright sky and stood there, like a puppet on strings.
"Thank you very much," he said with a polite bow. "Thanks to you, I am now a real sennin." Then he walked quietly up into the blue sky, into the clouds.
Nobody knows what happened to the doctor and his wife. But their pine tree stayed for a long time. They say that a very rich merchant, Yodoya Tatsugoro, later had the huge tree moved to his own garden to enjoy it in the snow.
