In an old city, there was a famous wooden statue of a god. It was very beautiful, and it was covered with gold. One spring, the people decided to move it to a new temple on the other side of the city. They needed an animal to carry it, so they chose a small gray donkey.
The donkey's driver tied the statue carefully onto the donkey's back. "Walk slowly and carefully," he said. "This is very important work."
They started along the main street. The street was full of people, because everyone wanted to see the statue. When the donkey came near, something amazing happened. The people bowed down low. Some of them even knelt on the ground. Women threw flowers onto the road, and children sang songs.
The donkey looked around in surprise. "Why are they all bowing?" he thought. Then he had an idea. "Of course! They are bowing to me! They know that I am a very special donkey. Maybe I am the most important animal in the city!"
He lifted his head high. He made his ears stand up straight. He began to walk slowly, like a king. Every time people bowed, he felt bigger and prouder.
Then, in the middle of the street, he stopped. "Why should I walk so fast?" he thought. "These people love me. I am going to stand here so that they can look at me for a long time."
"Come on," said the driver. "Keep walking."
The donkey did not move. He stood there with his nose in the air.
"Move!" said the driver, and he pulled the rope. But the donkey only closed his eyes and smiled. People were starting to look at each other. "What is wrong with that donkey?" someone asked.
At last, the driver lost his patience. He took his stick and hit the donkey on his back, hard. "You silly, foolish donkey!" he shouted. "Do you really think those people are bowing to you? They are bowing to the god on your back! Nobody in this city will ever bow down to a donkey!"
The donkey opened his eyes. Suddenly, he understood. His ears went down, and his face turned hot. Without another word, he started walking again, quickly and quietly, all the way to the temple.
