On a farm, there lived a big, strong ox. Every day, he pulled a heavy plow across the fields for the farmer. It was hard work, but the ox never complained.
One evening, the ox was resting in the barn. A tiny flea jumped onto the edge of a bucket near his head. She looked up at the ox with her tiny eyes.
"Excuse me," said the flea. "May I ask you a question?"
"Of course," said the ox in his slow, deep voice.
"I don't understand you," said the flea. "You are so big and so strong. You could knock down a wall with your head. You could break a fence with one kick. But every day, you work for those humans. You pull their heavy plow. You carry their heavy things. You do everything they want. Why?"
The ox thought about this. "Well," he said, "why not?"
"Look at me," said the flea proudly. "I am very, very small. But I don't work for humans. I bite them! I drink their blood whenever I want. I jump on them, and I live on them, and I never do anything for them. And you, a big strong animal, are their servant. It is silly!"
The ox smiled. "But I am happy," he said. "The humans are good to me. They give me fresh hay and clean water. They give me a warm barn to sleep in. When I am sick, they take care of me. And best of all, they love me. Every evening, the farmer comes and pats me on the head. He says, 'Good ox, good ox.' I love it when he pats me."
At that moment, the farmer came into the barn. He walked up to the ox and patted his big head. "Good ox," he said gently. "You worked so hard today."
The flea's tiny body began to shake. "Pats?" she whispered. "You like pats?"
"Yes," said the ox. "Don't you?"
"Oh no, no, no," said the flea. "For you, a pat is a happy thing. But for me, it is the end! When a human pats me, he squashes me flat!"
Just then, the farmer saw something on the bucket. "What is that?" he said, and he lifted his hand.
The flea did not wait. She jumped as high and as far as she could, out of the barn door and into the night. The ox laughed softly. "Every animal has a different life," he said to himself. And he closed his eyes and enjoyed another pat.
