Every Saturday afternoon, a high school student named Yuna goes to a small community center near her home. She puts on an apron and starts to cut carrots and onions. By five o'clock, the room is full of children, parents, and older people. They are all there for dinner at a kodomo shokudo, or "children's cafeteria."
A kodomo shokudo is a place where children can eat a meal for free or for a very low price. At Yuna's kodomo shokudo, dinner is free for children and three hundred yen for adults. Most of these places are run by volunteers, such as students, parents, and retired people. Farmers and local shops often give them rice and vegetables.
The name "kodomo shokudo" was first used in 2012 at a small vegetable shop in Ota Ward, Tokyo. The shop owner heard about a child in the area who sometimes had only one banana to eat for the whole day, except for school lunch. She wanted to make a warm place where a child could come in alone and feel safe.
After that, the idea spread quickly all over Japan. A group that studies kodomo shokudo counted more than 12,600 of them in 2025. That is almost seventy percent of the number of public elementary schools in Japan.
Why do children need these places? Some families do not have enough money for good food. In other families, parents work until late at night, so the children often eat dinner alone. Eating alone every day can be lonely. At a kodomo shokudo, children can eat warm food and talk with many people.
Today, most kodomo shokudo are open to everyone, not only to children from poor families. This is very important. If a place is "only for poor children," some children may feel ashamed to go there. When everyone in the town can come, nobody has to worry about that. Older people who live alone also enjoy coming, and children can talk with them like their own grandparents.
Yuna enjoys her volunteer work very much. When a boy named Kaito first came, he was very quiet and did not talk to anyone. Now he helps Yuna wash the dishes and tells her about his soccer games. "Before, I didn't know many people in my town," Yuna says. "Now I say hello to them on the street."
But kodomo shokudo also have some problems. Some of them are open only once or twice a month, so they cannot help children every day. Many do not have enough money or volunteers. Also, the children who need help the most do not always come. Some people say that the government, not volunteers, should do more for poor children.
What do you think? Some people say that every town should have a kodomo shokudo, because it gives children good food and a warm place to meet people. Others say that the government should do more to help poor families, because volunteers alone cannot solve the problem of child poverty.
