Do you use your smartphone too much? Many people ask this question today. In 2025, a city in Aichi called Toyoake made a new rule. The rule asked people to use smartphones for less than two hours a day in their free time. There was no punishment. But the rule was in the news all over Japan.
Let's imagine a high school student named Riku. One evening, Riku checked his screen time. He was using his phone for about five hours every day! "Where did all my time go?" he thought. So he decided to spend one week without his phone.
The first day was hard. Riku put his phone in a drawer in the living room. But again and again, his hand went to his pocket. On the train, almost everyone around him was looking at a phone. Riku did not know what to do with his eyes, so he looked out the window.
There were small problems, too. Riku always used his phone as an alarm clock, so he had to buy a cheap clock. He could not check train times or look up new English words. He used a paper dictionary for the first time in years. "This is slow," he said, "but I remember the words better."
On the third day, Riku felt lonely. At lunch, his friends laughed about a funny video, but Riku did not understand the joke. After school, they talked in their group chat. He could not join them. "I'm missing everything," he thought.
But then, things began to change. Without his phone, Riku went to bed earlier. He did not watch videos late at night, so he slept well and felt less tired in class. After school, he had time to read a novel and practice the guitar. He also talked more with his family at dinner.
On the sixth day, something happened. Riku's train stopped because of heavy rain. He could not call his mother. He had to borrow a phone from a kind classmate. That day, Riku understood that phones are not only for fun. They are also important for safety.
After seven days, Riku took his phone out of the drawer. He was happy to see it again. But he decided to make some rules. He turns off notifications when he is studying. He does not take his phone into his bedroom. Now he uses it for about two hours a day.
Riku's week shows two sides of smartphones. Phones help us talk with friends, find information, and stay safe. But they can also take away our time, our sleep, and our attention. Some people say that the most important thing is not to stop using phones, but to choose how we use them.
What do you think? Some people say that young people should spend less time on their phones, because they can sleep better and do more things in real life. Others say that this is not necessary, because phones are useful tools for studying, keeping in touch with friends, and staying safe.
