Long ago, before people rode horses, there was a wild horse who lived in a big green meadow. The meadow was wide and beautiful, and there was a clear river running through it. The horse was the only large animal there. All the sweet grass was his, and he could run wherever he wanted. He was very happy.
But one day, a deer came into the meadow. She looked around at the green grass and the clear river. "What a lovely place," she said, and she started to eat.
The horse was angry. "This is my meadow!" he said. "Go away!" But the deer did not go away. She was faster than the horse, so he could not chase her out. Every day she came back and ate more grass. The horse became angrier and angrier. "I want to punish her," he thought. "I want revenge."
One day, a man walked past the meadow. He was carrying a spear. The horse ran over to him. "Man," he said, "will you help me? There is a deer in my meadow, and I want to punish her. You have a spear. Can you help me catch her?"
The man smiled. "I can help you," he said. "But you must help me too. I can't run as fast as a deer. So you must let me put this rope in your mouth. Then I will sit on your back, and you will carry me. Together, we will be faster than the deer."
The horse did not like the idea of a rope in his mouth. But he wanted revenge so badly. "All right," he said. "Just this one time."
So the man put the rope in the horse's mouth and climbed onto his back. The horse ran after the deer. The man threw his spear, but the deer jumped away into the hills and was gone. The horse did not care too much. "At least she is out of my meadow," he said. "Thank you, man. Now take off the rope and get down."
But the man did not get down. He pulled the rope. "No," he said. "You are very useful to me. You are strong and fast. From now on, you will carry me wherever I want to go."
The horse tried to shake him off, but the rope was strong, and the man held on. That evening, the man took him to a village and put him in a small dark stable.
From that day on, the horse worked for people. He carried them, and he pulled their wagons. He never ran free in his meadow again. "I wanted revenge on the deer," he thought sadly. "But the only one I really punished was myself."
