One day, Zeus, the king of the gods, sent a message to all the animals of the forest. "Next week, there will be a big contest," said the message. "Bring your babies to my mountain. The animal with the most beautiful baby will get a wonderful prize."
The animals were very excited. "My baby will win," said the deer. "My baby will win," said the rabbit. Everyone began to wash and brush their little ones.
On the day of the contest, the animals came up the mountain in a long line. The baby deer had soft brown spots. The baby swan was white like snow. The baby lion had bright golden fur. The baby rabbits had long ears and pink noses. They were all very cute.
At the end of the line, a mother monkey was walking slowly. She was holding her baby in her arms. He was very small. He had a flat little nose, big ears, and almost no fur. His face was full of lines, like an old man's face.
When she stood in front of Zeus, she held her baby up high. "This is my son," she said proudly.
For a moment, everything was quiet. Then the animals started to laugh. The parrot laughed so hard that she fell off her branch. "That is the most beautiful baby?" said the fox. "He looks like an old potato!" The other animals were laughing too, and some of them were pointing at the baby.
The baby monkey hid his face in his mother's arm. But the mother monkey did not cry. She did not run away. She stood up straight and looked at all the animals.
"Laugh if you want to," she said in a clear voice. "I do not know if Zeus is going to give the prize to my son. But I know one thing. To me, his mother, he is the dearest and most beautiful baby in the whole world."
The animals stopped laughing. Some of them looked down at their own babies, and they understood her feelings.
Zeus smiled. The story does not say who won the prize that day. But the mother monkey walked home with her baby in her arms, and she was the happiest mother on the mountain.
