A hunter was walking home one afternoon. He was very happy, because he had caught a big, fat rabbit in his trap. He carried it on his shoulder and thought about dinner. "My wife will cook it with carrots and onions," he said to himself. "What a delicious meal we are going to have!"
On the way, he heard the sound of a horse behind him. A man on a fine white horse was riding along the road. When he came close, he stopped.
"Good afternoon," said the rider with a friendly smile. "That is a beautiful rabbit you have there."
"Thank you," said the hunter proudly. "I caught it myself this morning."
"I would like to buy it," said the rider. "I will pay you a good price. But first, may I look at it? I want to see how heavy it is."
The hunter was happy to sell his rabbit for a good price. "Of course," he said, and he handed the rabbit up to the rider.
The rider took the rabbit. He held it up and looked at it. "Yes, it is a very good rabbit," he said. Then, suddenly, he kicked his horse. The horse jumped forward and galloped away down the road, with the rider and the rabbit on its back!
"Hey!" shouted the hunter. "Stop! Come back! You haven't paid me!"
He started to run after the horse. He ran as fast as he could. At first, he really believed that he could catch the rider. "He will stop soon," he thought. But the horse was very fast. The hunter ran and ran, but the horse got farther and farther away. Soon the hunter was out of breath. His face was red and wet. The horse was now just a small white dot in a cloud of dust.
The hunter stopped running. He knew that he could never catch the rider now. But there were some farmers working in the fields next to the road. They were all watching him. The hunter did not want to look like a fool in front of them.
So he put his hands around his mouth and shouted at the faraway rider, as loudly as he could. "That's all right! Go on! You can have it! It is a gift from me! I was going to give it to you anyway!"
The farmers looked at each other and laughed. They knew exactly what had happened.
The hunter walked home slowly. That evening, his wife asked, "Where is our rabbit?"
"I gave it away," said the hunter. "I am a very generous man." And they had carrots and onions for dinner, without any rabbit.
