Winter came to the forest. A mother fox and her little boy lived in a hole there.
One morning, the little fox went out of the hole. "Ah!" he cried. "Mother, something is in my eyes! Please take it out!" His mother looked, but there was nothing in his eyes. It was the snow. The new white snow was shining in the morning sun. It was too bright for him.
The little fox played in the snow all morning. When he came back, his hands were wet and red. "Mother, my hands are cold," he said. His mother blew on them and held them in her warm hands. "I will buy you some mittens," she thought.
That night, the mother and the little fox walked toward the town. Soon the little fox saw a light. "Mother, a star has fallen down there!" he said. "That is not a star," said his mother. "That is a light from the town." Then she stopped. Long ago, her friend tried to steal a duck in the town, and a farmer ran after him. She was afraid. She could not walk any more.
"You must go alone," she said. She took one of the little fox's hands and held it for a while. When she let go, it had become a human child's hand!
"Find the house with a sign of a big black hat," she said. "Knock and say, 'Good evening.' Then put this hand in and say, 'Mittens, please.' Do not show your other hand. People catch foxes." She gave him two silver coins.
The little fox found the hat shop and knocked. "Good evening." The door opened a little, and a bright light came out. The light was so bright that the little fox put in the wrong hand. It was his fox hand!
"Mittens for this hand, please," he said.
The man in the shop looked at the hand. "Oh, it's a fox," he thought. "Maybe he will pay with leaves." So he said, "Money first, please." The little fox gave him the coins. The man hit them together. Clink, clink. They made a good sound. They were real. So the man gave the little fox some small mittens.
On the way back, the little fox heard a soft song from a window. A human mother was singing to her child. "Mother, the little foxes in the forest are cold tonight, right?" the child asked. "No. They are listening to their mother's song, and they are going to sleep," she said. "Now you go to sleep, too."
The little fox wanted to see his mother. He ran all the way back to her.
"Mother, people are not scary!" he said. "I showed my fox hand by mistake, but the man did not catch me. He gave me these warm mittens." "Really?" said his mother. "Are people really good? Are they really good?"
