Rosei thought he was dying. Everything grew dark in front of his eyes. The sound of his children and grandchildren crying slowly faded away into the distance. His feet felt very heavy, and his body sank down and down. Then, suddenly, something surprised him, and he opened his eyes wide.
The old Taoist named Roo was still sitting by his pillow. The innkeeper was cooking millet, and it was not ready yet. Rosei lifted his head from the blue-green pillow. He rubbed his eyes and gave a big yawn. It was an autumn afternoon in the town of Handan. The sun was shining on the trees without leaves, but the air was a little cold.
"You are awake," said Roo. He was biting his beard, and he was trying not to smile.
"Yes."
"You had a dream, didn't you?"
"I did."
"What kind of dream was it?"
"It was a very long dream. First, I married a daughter of a good family. I think she was a beautiful and gentle woman. The next year, I passed the great examination and became an official. After that, everything went well, and I quickly became one of the most important men in the country."
"But someone told lies about me, and I nearly lost my life. I escaped death just in time, but the government sent me away to a faraway land. I stayed there for five or six years. Then people learned the truth and called me back. I became the top minister, and the emperor made me a duke. By that time, I was quite old, I think. I had five sons and dozens of grandchildren."
"And then what happened?"
"I died. I think I was over eighty."
Roo stroked his beard. He looked very pleased with himself.
"So you have tasted both good times and bad times, both success and failure. That is very good. Living is not very different from the dream you had. Now your strong wish to live must be much weaker. When you understand gain and loss, life and death, you see that they are not worth much. Don't you think so?"
Rosei was listening to him impatiently. When the old man asked again, Rosei raised his young face. His eyes were shining.
"It is a dream, and that is why I want to live even more. That dream ended, and this dream will end someday, too. Until that time comes, I want to live. I want to live so fully that I can say I truly lived. Don't you think so?"
Roo frowned and said neither yes nor no.
