Early one morning, a nightingale was sitting high up in an old oak tree. She was small and brown, but her song was the most beautiful in the forest. She was singing to the rising sun, and her sweet voice was filling the air.
Not far away, a hawk was flying slowly over the trees. He was very hungry, because he had not caught anything for two days. When he heard the song, he turned his sharp eyes toward the oak tree. There, on a branch, was the little nightingale.
The hawk dived down. Before the nightingale could move, his claws had caught her. He flew to another branch and held her tightly.
"Oh, please, please!" cried the nightingale. "Please let me go! Do not eat me!"
"Why not?" said the hawk. "I am hungry, and you are food."
"But look at me," said the nightingale quickly. "I am so small! I am only a few feathers and a song. I can't fill the stomach of a big, strong bird like you. You will still be hungry after you eat me."
"Hmm," said the hawk.
"You should catch a bigger bird," the nightingale went on. "A fat pigeon, or a big duck, or a nice goose. One of those will fill you up for the whole day. I am too little to be worth your time. Please let me go, and go and find a bigger bird."
The hawk looked around. He looked up at the sky. He looked over the trees and down at the river. There were no pigeons. There were no ducks. There were no geese. There was nothing at all, except the little bird in his claws.
"You are a very good talker," said the hawk. "And maybe you are right. Maybe a big bird would be better. But I do not see any big birds. I see only you."
"But they will come!" cried the nightingale. "Just wait!"
"I would be a great fool," said the hawk, "to let go of the food in my claws. I am not going to chase birds that I can't even see. A small breakfast is better than no breakfast at all."
The nightingale had no more words. The forest was very quiet that morning. And far away, a fat pigeon flew safely across the sky, with nobody to see it.
