There were two roosters on a small farm. One was red, and the other was brown. Both of them wanted to be the boss of the farmyard. "I am the strongest," said the red rooster. "No, I am the strongest," said the brown rooster. Every day they were arguing, and every day the hens were tired of it.
小さな農場に、二羽のオンドリがいました。一羽は赤く、もう一羽は茶色でした。どちらも、農場の庭のボスになりたがっていました。「おれがいちばん強い」と、赤いオンドリが言いました。「いや、おれがいちばん強い」と、茶色いオンドリが言いました。二羽は毎日言い争いをしていて、メンドリたちは毎日それにうんざりしていました。
One morning, they decided to fight. They jumped at each other with their wings open. Feathers were flying everywhere. The hens and chicks watched from the side. The fight went on and on, but at last the brown rooster was too tired. He ran away and hid behind a haystack in a quiet corner.
ある朝、二羽は決着をつけることにしました。つばさを広げて、おたがいに飛びかかりました。羽があちこちに飛び散りました。メンドリやひよこたちは、わきで見ていました。戦いはいつまでも続きましたが、とうとう茶色いオンドリがへとへとになりました。茶色いオンドリは逃げ出して、静かなすみっこの干し草の山の後ろに隠れました。
The red rooster was very proud. "I won! I won!" he said. "Now everyone will know that I am the king of this farm."
赤いオンドリは鼻高々でした。「勝った！ 勝ったぞ！」と、赤いオンドリは言いました。「これでみんな、おれがこの農場の王さまだとわかるだろう」
Telling only the hens was not enough for him. He wanted the whole world to know. So he flew up to the top of the highest wall on the farm. He stood up tall, opened his wings wide, and crowed with all his might. "Cock-a-doodle-doo! I am the boss! I am the bravest bird in the world! Cock-a-doodle-doo!"
赤いオンドリは、メンドリたちに知らせるだけでは満足できませんでした。世界中に知らせたかったのです。そこで、農場でいちばん高い壁のてっぺんに飛び上がりました。胸をはってすっくと立ち、つばさを大きく広げ、力のかぎり鳴きました。「コケコッコー！ おれがボスだ！ おれは世界一勇敢な鳥だ！ コケコッコー！」
His voice was so loud that it went far across the fields and up into the sky. High above the farm, a big eagle was flying in slow circles. She heard the noise, and she looked down. There, on the top of the wall, was a fat red rooster. He was easy to see, and he was not looking up.
その声はとても大きかったので、野原をこえて遠くまで、空の上まで響きわたりました。農場のはるか上空では、大きなワシがゆっくりと輪を描いて飛んでいました。ワシはその声を聞いて、下を見ました。壁のてっぺんに、よく太った赤いオンドリがいます。とても見つけやすく、しかも上を見ていません。
The eagle closed her wings and dived. The red rooster was still crowing when her great claws caught him. In a moment, she carried him up into the sky, and he was gone.
ワシはつばさをたたんで、急降下しました。赤いオンドリがまだ鳴いているうちに、ワシの大きなつめがオンドリをとらえました。あっというまに、ワシはオンドリを空へ連れ去り、オンドリは消えてしまいました。
Behind the haystack, the brown rooster heard everything. He waited for a while. Then he slowly came out of his corner. He looked up at the empty wall, and he looked around at the hens.
干し草の山の後ろで、茶色いオンドリは一部始終を聞いていました。しばらく待ってから、ゆっくりとすみっこから出てきました。だれもいなくなった壁を見上げ、それからメンドリたちを見まわしました。
"Well," he said quietly, "it seems that I am the boss now."
「さて」と、茶色いオンドリは静かに言いました。「どうやら、今はおれがボスらしいな」
And so he was. He ruled the farmyard for many years. He was a good boss, too, because he never once stood on the high wall to crow about himself.
そして、そのとおりになりました。茶色いオンドリは何年もの間、農場の庭を治めました。しかも、よいボスでした。高い壁の上に立って、自分の強さを鳴いて自慢することは、一度もなかったからです。
