Leo was a fisherman, but he loved music more than fish. Every evening, he sat outside his little house by the sea and played his wooden flute. The people in his village said, "Leo plays like a bird. His music is magic."
Leo began to believe them. One night, he had an idea. "If my music is magic, the fish will love it too," he thought. "I will not need to work hard with my net anymore. I will just play, and the fish will dance into it!"
The next morning, Leo walked down to the beach. He carried his flute in one hand and his net in the other. He climbed up onto a tall rock above the water. Then he put his net in the sea below him, and he started to play.
He played a happy song. He played a sad song. He played a fast dancing tune, the best one he knew. The sun was rising higher and higher, and the seagulls were crying above his head. But not one fish came near the net.
"Maybe they are still sleeping," Leo said. "I will play louder." He played until his fingers were tired and his mouth was dry. He waited and waited. Still nothing happened. The net was empty, and the sea was quiet.
At last, Leo put his flute down. "Well," he said with a sigh, "I am going to do it the old way." He picked up his net and threw it far out into the sea. Then he pulled it back slowly, because it was very heavy.
When the net came up onto the rock, it was full of fish! They were jumping and flipping everywhere. Their silver bodies were shining in the sun. They looked just like dancers at a party.
Leo looked down at them, and he started to laugh. "You silly fish!" he said. "When I played music for you, you did not dance at all. I stopped playing, and now you are all dancing happily!"
That evening, Leo played his flute for the village again. But the next morning, he went fishing with his net, like every other fisherman.
