That night, Ren started reading The Secret Garden. It was about Mary, a lonely and unhappy girl. She went to live in a big old house in England. Near the house, there was a garden with high walls. Nobody could go in, because the door was locked and the key was lost.
Ren read until two in the morning. The English was old, but the story was easy to follow. Then he found the part he was looking for. A little bird, a robin, was digging in the ground. Mary looked down and saw an old key in the earth. The robin showed her the key.
"The robin will show you the way, by the river of ducks," Ren read on the card again. "But where is the river of ducks?"
The next day, he showed the card to his friend Mika in the university cafeteria. Mika studied history. She had a long ponytail, and she always wore a bright yellow scarf.
"That's easy!" Mika said. "It's the Kamo River! Its name is written with the kanji for duck. The river near your shop is the river of ducks!"
"And the robin?" "A robin is 'komadori' in Japanese," she said. "Maybe there's a shop called Komadori near the river."
After their classes, they walked north along the river. The water was clear, and many ducks were swimming in it. At Demachiyanagi, where two rivers meet, children were jumping across big stones shaped like turtles.
They walked up and down the small streets for an hour. Mika was getting tired. Then Ren stopped. On an old wooden door, there was a small painting of a bird with an orange chest. Next to it, a sign said "Cafe Komadori."
Inside, the cafe was warm and dark, and it smelled of coffee. An old woman with white hair and a purple apron came out. "Welcome," she said. "Two coffees?"
Ren was nervous, but he showed her the blue card. "Excuse me. This is a strange question," he said. "Do you know anything about this? About Hana?"
The woman read the card. Her hand went to her mouth. "Oh my," she said. "Please wait here."
She went into the back room. A few minutes later, she came back with an old paper bag. It was yellow with age. "My name is Nakai," she said. "Thirty years ago, a friend gave this to me. She said, 'Someday my daughter Hana will come and ask about the robin. Please give her this.' I waited and waited. But Hana never came."
Inside the bag was another English book, Little Women. A second blue envelope was inside the cover.
"Your friend," said Mika softly. "Who was she?"
Mrs. Nakai smiled sadly. "Her name was Sachiko. Sachiko Tachibana. Her husband has an old bookshop near here. She died five years ago."
Ren almost dropped his cup. "Tachibana? I work at that shop," he said. "But Mr. Tachibana never told me he had a daughter."
Mrs. Nakai looked out of the window at the gray sky. "No," she said quietly. "He never talks about her. Not to anyone."
