"I'm sorry," Ren said. "I didn't want to hurt you. I only wanted to know..."
"There is nothing to know," said Mr. Tachibana. "My daughter left. She chose England, not her family. That is all. The past is closed, like an old book. Please don't open it again."
For a week, Ren did not open the third envelope. At the shop, he and Mr. Tachibana spoke only about work. The shop felt colder than the December wind.
On Friday evening, Mika came to Ren's apartment with two cups of hot chocolate. "You look terrible," she said. "Is it because of the game?"
"He told me to stop," said Ren. "It's his family. It's not my business."
Mika put the little blue book of poems on the table. "Ren, did you see his face when he talked about her? He isn't angry. He's sad. And Sachiko-san made this game for a reason. She wanted somebody to finish it." She opened the book to the last poem and read it aloud. It was about a girl who walked away from home, and then waited and waited for a door to open again.
Ren looked at the poem for a long time. Then he opened the third envelope.
"My dear Hana, Do you remember Alice? She followed the White Rabbit down a deep hole into another world, because she was curious. Be curious, Hana. In our city, there is an old well that goes to another world. Ask the priest there. Love, Mom."
That weekend, Ren read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland again. He laughed at the Mad Tea Party and the cat with the big smile. "Alice was always curious," he thought. "That's how she found her way."
Mika knew the place right away. "There's a famous old story in Higashiyama," she said. "It is said that a man named Ono no Takamura went down an old well at a small temple every night. He went to the world of the dead to help the king there, and he came back every morning."
On Sunday, they went to the temple. It was small and quiet, between old wooden houses. In the garden, there was an old well behind a little fence. An old priest was sweeping the leaves.
When Ren said the name "Sachiko Tachibana," the priest stopped sweeping. "Ah," he said. "So, at last, someone has come." He went inside and came back with an old copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Inside the cover was a fourth blue envelope.
"Sachiko-san came here every spring," the priest said. "Every time, she asked me, 'Has my daughter come?' And every time, I said no. The last time was six years ago. She was already sick. She said, 'If a young person comes instead of Hana, please help them. Maybe that person can bring her home.'"
Ren held the book carefully. Suddenly it felt very heavy in his hands.
They thanked the priest and walked out of the gate. Across the narrow street, a woman in a gray coat and a red scarf was standing still. She was looking at them. When Ren looked at her, she turned and walked away quickly.
"Mika," Ren said. "That woman. She came to the shop!"
But before he could follow her, his phone rang. It was a number he did not know. "Is this Ren Aoki?" a voice said. "I'm calling from the hospital. Mr. Tachibana fell down in his shop. He is asking for you."
