A man had seven sons, but no daughter. He wanted a daughter very much, and at last his wife had a baby girl. They were very happy, but the baby was small and weak. She had to be christened right away, so the father needed some water from the well.
He sent one of the boys to the well to get the water. The other six ran after him. Each of them wanted to be the first to fill the jug, and in the end the jug fell into the well. They were afraid to go home.
The father waited and waited. "Those boys are playing and have forgotten everything!" he cried. "I wish they would all turn into ravens!" As soon as he said these words, he heard wings over his head. He looked up and saw seven black ravens flying away.
The parents were very sorry, but they could not take back the words. The little girl grew stronger and more beautiful every day. For a long time she did not know that she had any brothers, because her parents never talked about them.
But one day she heard some people talking. "The girl is pretty," they said, "but it's her fault that her seven brothers were lost." She was very sad. She asked her parents, "Did I have brothers? Where are they now?" Then they had to tell her everything. "It was not your fault," they said. But the girl felt that she must save her brothers.
She left home secretly. She took only her parents' little ring, a loaf of bread, a small jug of water, and a little chair for when she was tired. She walked and walked, to the end of the world.
She came to the sun, but it was too hot and frightening. She ran away to the moon, but it was cold and unkind. "I smell a human child!" said the moon. So she ran away quickly.
Then she came to the stars. They were kind to her, and each of them sat on its own little chair. The morning star stood up and gave her a small bone. "You need this bone to open the Glass Mountain," it said. "Your brothers are inside."
The girl wrapped the bone in a cloth and walked on until she came to the Glass Mountain. The door was locked. She opened the cloth, but it was empty! She had lost the star's present. She had no key. What could she do? So the brave girl put her own little finger into the lock, and the door opened.
Inside, a little dwarf came to meet her. "What are you looking for, my child?" he asked. "I'm looking for my brothers, the seven ravens." "They are not at home now," said the dwarf. "But you can come in and wait." He put seven little plates and seven little cups on the table for their dinner. The girl ate a little from each plate and drank a little from each cup. Into the last cup she dropped the ring.
Suddenly she heard wings and voices in the air. "The ravens are coming home," said the dwarf. They came in and sat down to eat and drink. "Who has eaten from my plate?" they said. "Who has drunk from my cup? It was a human mouth!"
When the seventh raven finished his cup, the ring rolled out. He looked at it and knew that it was his parents' ring. "Maybe our little sister is here!" he said. "If she is, we will be free at last!"
The girl was standing behind the door. When she heard this, she came out. At once all the ravens turned back into young men. They hugged and kissed one another, and then they all went happily home together.
