An old farmer and his wife lived in a little old farmhouse. They were poor, but they had one horse. One day, the wife said, "Old man, take the horse to the fair today. Sell it, or trade it for something more useful. Whatever you do will be right." She tied his scarf nicely, gave him a kiss, and off he rode.
On the road he met a man with a beautiful cow. "A cow gives good milk," thought the old man. "Shall we trade?" he asked. "Sure!" said the man. So the old man got the cow for his horse.
He could go home now, but he wanted to see the fair. So he walked on with his cow. Soon he met a man with a fat sheep. "A sheep would be even better," he thought. "It can eat the grass by our fence." So he traded the cow for the sheep.
Then he met a man with a big goose. "My wife always says, 'If only we had a goose!'" he thought. So he traded the sheep for the goose.
Near the town, he saw a fine hen. "A hen can find its own food and lay eggs," he thought. So he traded the goose for the hen.
By now he was hot, tired and hungry, so he went to an inn. At the door, he met a man with a big sack. "What's in the sack?" "Rotten apples," said the man. "They're for the pigs." "What a waste!" said the old man. "My wife would love to see so many apples. Last year our tree gave us only one apple, and she kept it until it was rotten." So he traded the hen for the sack of rotten apples.
In the inn, he put the sack near the hot stove and sat down. Two rich Englishmen were sitting there. Soon the apples began to cook. Hiss, hiss! "What's that?" they asked. So the old man told them all about his trades.
The Englishmen laughed. "Your wife will be very angry when you get home!" said one. "No," said the old man. "She will kiss me and say, 'What the old man does is always right.'" "Let's bet on it," they said. "If she isn't angry, we'll give you a big sack of gold." "All right," said the old man.
So they all went to the farmhouse. "Good evening, old woman," said the old man. "I made a trade." "You always know best," said his wife, and she hugged him. "I traded the horse for a cow." "Wonderful! Now we'll have milk, butter and cheese!"
"But I traded the cow for a sheep." "Even better! We'll have wool for warm socks!" "But I traded the sheep for a goose." "Roast goose for dinner! You always think of me!" "But I traded the goose for a hen." "A hen will lay eggs, and we'll have little chicks! How clever you are!"
"But I traded the hen for a sack of rotten apples." "Then I must kiss you!" said the wife. "This morning I went to the schoolmaster's wife to borrow some herbs. She said, 'I don't have anything to give you, not even a rotten apple!' Now I can give her a whole sack of rotten apples! What fun!" And she kissed him.
"We like this!" said the Englishmen. "Things go wrong, and still she is happy!" And they gave the old man the gold. When two people always believe in each other, that is worth more than gold.
