Long, long ago, deep in the mountains, there was a huge peach tree. Its branches spread above the clouds, and its roots reached down to the land of the dead.
The tree flowered and bore fruit only once in ten thousand years. Its fruit was very large. But strangest of all, where the stone should be, each peach held a beautiful baby.
One lonely morning, fate came down to the tree in the shape of a great crow. It pecked at a small peach, and the peach fell into a mountain stream far below. The stream flowed toward the land where people lived.
Who picked up this peach? As every child in Japan knows, an old woman was washing clothes downstream.
Momotaro, the boy born from the peach, decided to go and conquer Onigashima, the island of the oni. Why? Because he did not want to work in the mountains and fields like the old man and woman. The old couple were tired of this naughty boy, so they gladly gave him a flag, a sword, and everything he asked for. They even made kibi-dango, or millet dumplings, for his journey.
On the way, a big, hungry dog called out to him. "Momotaro! What is that at your waist?" "The best millet dumplings in Japan," Momotaro answered proudly. In fact, even he was not sure of that. "Give me one, and I will go with you." Momotaro quickly did the math. "I will give you half."
The dog kept asking for a whole one, but Momotaro would not change his mind. As in all business, the one who has nothing must obey the one who has something. At last the dog sighed and agreed to follow him for half a dumpling.
In the same way, for half a dumpling each, Momotaro made a monkey and a pheasant his servants too. But they did not get along. The dog looked down on the weak monkey, the monkey looked down on the serious pheasant, and the pheasant looked down on the slow dog.
Soon the monkey, with his stomach full, began to complain that half a dumpling was not enough. The angry dog tried to bite him, and the monkey escaped up a tree. Momotaro said coldly, "All right, then don't come. But I will not give you any of the treasure of Onigashima."
The greedy monkey's eyes grew round. "Treasure?" "Yes. There is even a magic hammer that gives you anything you want." "Then I can shake out more magic hammers and get everything! Please take me, too!"
But Onigashima was not a rocky island, as people imagine. It was a beautiful paradise, with tall palm trees and colorful singing birds. The oni there loved peace. They played music, danced, and sang old songs. Their wives and daughters wove cloth and made bunches of orchids, just like human women.
An old oni grandmother often told her grandchildren how frightening humans were. "If you are naughty, I will send you to the island of humans. Humans have no horns, and their faces are pale and creepy. They tell lies, they are greedy, they kill each other, and they steal. They are terrible beasts..."
Momotaro brought these innocent oni a terror they had never known. The oni ran here and there among the palm trees, crying, "The humans are coming!" "Forward! Kill every oni you find!" Momotaro shouted, waving his peach flag.
The three animals were not good friends, but no soldiers are braver than hungry animals. The dog killed young oni with one bite, and the pheasant pecked the oni children to death with its sharp beak. The monkey, perhaps because monkeys are our close relatives, did terrible things to the oni girls before strangling them.
At last, the chief of the oni and the few oni still alive gave up. Fallen oni lay everywhere. Momotaro said solemnly, "Because I am merciful, I will spare your lives. In return, you must give me all your treasure, and your children as hostages."
"Yes, sir," said the chief. Then he timidly asked, "We must have been rude to you somehow, but we cannot understand how. Could you please tell us?" Momotaro nodded calmly. "I came to conquer Onigashima because I had taken on three loyal servants: the dog, the monkey, and the pheasant."
"Then why did you take on those three, sir?" "Because I wanted to conquer Onigashima, of course. That is why I gave them millet dumplings. Well? If you still don't understand, I will kill all of you, too." The chief jumped back in surprise and bowed even more politely.
Momotaro returned home in triumph, with the oni children pulling a cart of treasure. Every child knows this much. But Momotaro did not live happily ever after. When the oni children grew up, they bit to death the pheasant who guarded them and ran back to Onigashima. The oni sometimes crossed the sea to set fire to Momotaro's house or to try to kill him in his sleep. People say they killed the monkey by mistake, thinking he was Momotaro.
"Oni never forget a grudge. What a nuisance they are!" Momotaro sighed. "They even forget your kindness in sparing their lives!" the dog growled bitterly.
Meanwhile, on the lonely shore of Onigashima, under the lovely tropical moon, five or six young oni were putting bombs into coconuts to win back their island's freedom. They seemed to have forgotten even to fall in love with the gentle oni girls. They worked silently but happily, their teacup-sized eyes shining.
Deep in the mountains where no human goes, the peach tree above the clouds still bears countless fruits today. The peach that held Momotaro floated away long ago. But no one knows how many future geniuses are still sleeping inside those fruits. When will that great crow come down to the tree again? Ah, no one knows how many future geniuses are still sleeping inside those fruits...
