By the age of ten, Helen Keller could already communicate with the people around her. Her teacher, Anne Sullivan, spelled words into her hand with her fingers, and Helen spelled back. She could also read books printed with raised letters. For a deaf and blind child in the 1880s, this was already amazing. But Helen was not satisfied.
She knew that the people around her talked with their mouths. Spelling with fingers felt slow to her, and it limited what she could do. She often moved her lips and made sounds, even though she could not hear them. Not everyone liked this. Some people worried that speaking was too hard a goal for her and that she would get hurt. But Helen did not give up.
Then, in 1890, a visitor told her a story. In Norway, there was a girl named Ragnhild Kaata who was also deaf and blind, and she had learned to speak. Helen was filled with excitement when she heard this. Right away, she made up her mind: she would learn to speak, too.
Her teacher took her to Sarah Fuller, the head of a school for deaf children in Boston. Miss Fuller offered to teach Helen herself. Their lessons began on the twenty-sixth of March, 1890.
How can someone who cannot hear learn to speak? Miss Fuller let Helen touch her face while she talked. Through her fingers, Helen could feel how the tongue and lips moved for each sound. Then she tried to make the same movements herself. In just one hour, she could say six sounds: M, P, A, S, T and I. Altogether, she had eleven lessons with Miss Fuller.
During those lessons, Helen said her first full sentence aloud: "It is warm." Her voice was rough, and the words were not clear. Still, it was a real sentence, and she had made it with her own mouth. For Helen, it felt like a new door had opened.
「It is warm(あたたかい)」。
But one sentence was not enough. In the beginning, only her teachers could follow what she said. To strangers, her speech sounded like a string of strange noises.
So Helen kept going, month after month. She rested her fingers on Miss Sullivan's lips and throat and copied what she felt. She said the same words again and again, sometimes for hours, until they sounded a little more natural. There was no shortcut. The only way forward was to keep repeating.
There were days when she felt tired and discouraged. On those days, she thought about going home. She wanted to talk to her family with her own voice, and most of all to her little sister, Mildred. That hope gave her the strength to try one more time.
Helen also gave much of the credit to Anne Sullivan. For many years, her teacher listened to her every day and gently corrected the words she said wrongly. Learning to speak was not a race that Helen ran alone. It was teamwork.
Helen Keller went on to give speeches in many countries. Her voice was never perfect, but people listened, because what she said mattered.
Try this today. Helen learned by feeling how sounds are made. Choose one English sound that is hard for you, such as R, L or TH. Look in a mirror, watch your mouth and tongue, and put your fingers on your throat as you say it. Practice it ten times today. Like Helen, take one small step, and then another.
