Every morning, something wonderful happens to you, and you probably do not even notice it. In 1908, the English writer Arnold Bennett called it the daily miracle. He wrote about it in a small book called How to Live on 24 Hours a Day. In Japan, it is loved under the title Jibun no Jikan, or Your Own Time.
Bennett starts by talking about money. Newspapers, he says, are full of articles on how to live on a certain amount of money each year. People argue about them with great passion. But he had never seen an article called "How to live on twenty-four hours a day." That seemed strange to him, because time is much more valuable than money.
People say, "Time is money." Bennett thought that this saying does not go far enough. If you have time, you can usually get money. But even the richest person in the world cannot buy one extra minute. A millionaire has no more time than you have, or than the cat sleeping by the fire.
Now think about how time arrives. You wake up in the morning, and your purse is magically filled with twenty-four hours. They are yours. They are the most precious thing you own. Bennett called this a miracle, and when you think about it, it really is one.
He pointed out several amazing things about this gift. First, no one can steal it from you. Second, no one gets more than you or less than you. In the world of time, there are no rich people and no poor people. A genius does not get even one extra hour a day as a reward.
Third, there is no punishment. You can waste your time as much as you like, and tomorrow you will still get another twenty-four hours. No one will say, "This person wasted his time, so we will stop giving him any more."
Fourth, you cannot borrow from the future. You cannot get into debt with time. You can only waste the moment you are in now. You cannot waste tomorrow, because it is kept safe for you. You cannot waste the next hour; it is waiting for you, fresh and new.
From these twenty-four hours, Bennett says, we must make everything: our health, our pleasure, our money, our happiness, the respect of others, and the growth of our souls. So the way we use them is the most important question in our lives. Our happiness depends on it.
Then Bennett asks a sharp question. Which of us is not always saying, "I will do that when I have more time"? I will start learning a language when I have more time. I will read that book when I have more time. I will exercise when I have more time.
His answer is simple and strong: we will never have more time. We already have all the time there is. We have always had it. Every person in history who did something great had exactly the same twenty-four hours a day that you have today.
This idea can feel a little uncomfortable at first. It takes away our favorite excuse. But it is also full of hope. Because you cannot waste tomorrow in advance, you can begin again every day, even every hour. As Bennett says, you can turn over a new leaf every hour if you choose. Yesterday may have been wasted, but today's twenty-four hours have just arrived, perfect and unused.
Try this today. Tonight, before you go to bed, remember that tomorrow morning you will receive a new gift of twenty-four hours. Decide now on one hour, or even thirty minutes, that you will use for something you really care about. When the miracle arrives, you will be ready.
