James Allen was an English writer who became famous for a small book called As a Man Thinketh. In 1911, he wrote another book called Eight Pillars of Prosperity. Prosperity means success and wealth, a life in which things are going well.
Many people, Allen says, believe that a better life can only come from changes in laws or in society. He agreed that good laws are important. But he believed that no law can make a person or a country prosperous if the people themselves do not have good character.
To explain his idea, Allen used a picture. Prosperity, he said, is like a house. It is a roof over your head that gives you protection and comfort. But a roof needs something to hold it up, and that support needs a foundation under it. In Allen's picture, the roof of prosperity is held up by eight pillars, and the pillars stand on a foundation of moral consistency. This means being good not just sometimes, but all the time.
What are the eight pillars? Energy, economy, integrity, system, sympathy, sincerity, impartiality and self-reliance. Allen wrote a chapter about each one. Here they are, explained simply.
Energy means working with spirit, getting up and doing things now instead of waiting. Economy means not wasting: not only money, but also time and strength. Integrity means being honest and keeping your promises, even when no one is watching. System means doing things in good order, with a plan, so that nothing important is forgotten.
Sympathy means kindness and understanding toward other people. Sincerity means being real and not pretending to be someone you are not. Impartiality means being fair, and looking at a problem without taking one side just because it is your side. Self-reliance means standing on your own feet and trusting your own judgment.
Allen believed that a business built on all eight of these pillars would be so strong that nothing could knock it down. Notice that only a few of the pillars are about money. Most of them are about character: how we work, how we treat people, and how honest we are. For Allen, success on the outside always stands on good habits on the inside.
We can take Allen's picture one step further. A house with only one or two pillars may stand for a while. Many people have energy but no system, or honesty but little sympathy. But when a strong wind comes, such a house may fall. The more pillars you build, the safer your house becomes.
These ideas are useful for students, too. Imagine your school life as a house.
Energy is starting your homework without waiting. Economy is not wasting your free time. Integrity is not copying a friend's answers. System is keeping a study plan.
Sympathy is helping a classmate who is having trouble. Sincerity is being yourself. Impartiality is listening fairly to both sides in an argument. Self-reliance is trying hard problems by yourself first.
Try this today. Look at the eight pillars and choose the one that is weakest in your life right now. Then do one small thing to make it stronger today. For example, if your weak pillar is system, write a simple plan for tomorrow before you go to bed.
