In 1903, an English writer named James Allen published a very small book. You can read the whole thing in one evening. But this little book, As a Man Thinketh, has been read by millions of people around the world for more than one hundred years. In Japan, it is loved under the title The Law of Cause and Effect.
The title comes from an old line in the Bible: "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he." In modern English, it means, "A person becomes what he thinks in his heart." Allen believed that these words were true for every part of our lives. Our character, he said, is simply the total of all our thoughts.
To explain this, Allen used the picture of a plant. A plant grows from a seed, and it cannot grow without one. In the same way, every action grows from a hidden seed of thought. Even the things we do suddenly, without planning, come from thoughts that have been growing in us for a long time. An action is the flower of a thought, and joy and pain are its fruit.
Let's imagine two students. Every time Ken makes a mistake in English class, he thinks, "I'm bad at English. I'll never be good at it." He thinks this so many times that it becomes a habit. Soon he stops raising his hand, he stops opening his textbook, and his grades fall. Then he says, "See? I was right."
Mina makes the same mistakes. But she thinks, "I don't understand this yet. What can I learn from it?" She asks questions and tries again. A year later, people say that Mina is "good at English." But it was not luck. Mina's skill grew from the seeds she planted in her mind, one small thought at a time.
Allen said that a good and strong character is not a gift of chance. It is the natural result of continued effort in right thinking. A weak or unkind character grows in exactly the same way, from weak or unkind thoughts that we keep for a long time. In the world of thought, cause and effect works as surely as it does in the world of things. If you drop a stone, it falls. If you keep a thought, it grows.
This can sound frightening, but Allen saw it as wonderful news. If our thoughts made us what we are, then our thoughts can also make us into something better. A person is always the master of his own mind, even when he feels weak. A weak person is like a foolish master who runs his house badly. But when he begins to look carefully at his life and searches for the law behind it, he becomes a wise master.
How can we find this law? Allen compared it to finding gold. Gold and diamonds are found only by people who dig deep and search for a long time. In the same way, we can learn the truth about ourselves if we dig into our own minds. We should watch our thoughts, change them, and notice how they affect us, the people around us, and our lives. Even the smallest daily event can teach us something.
There is an old saying: "Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened." Allen believed this was especially true here. Only with patience and practice can we open the door to knowing ourselves.
Try this today. Choose one hour and quietly notice the thoughts that come into your mind. Are they seeds of flowers or seeds of weeds? When you find a weed, such as "I can't do it," gently change it to "I can't do it yet." It is a very small change. But according to Allen, every great tree began as a very small seed.
