Late one night, a thief came to a big house at the edge of the town. He knew that a rich merchant lived there. He also knew that there was a big watchdog in the garden.
"If the dog barks, the merchant will wake up," thought the thief. "But I have a plan." He had a bag full of delicious meat with him. "No dog can say no to meat. While he is eating, I will go into the house."
He went quietly to the garden gate. Soon, the big brown dog came running to the gate. He looked at the thief with his ears up.
"Good evening, nice doggy," whispered the thief in a sweet voice. "Look what I have for you." He took a piece of meat out of his bag and threw it through the gate. Then he threw another piece, and another. "Eat, eat. Good dog."
The dog looked at the meat on the ground. It smelled wonderful. But he did not eat it. He looked up at the thief.
"Why are you giving me this?" asked the dog.
"Oh, because I like you," said the thief. "You are a very nice dog. I just want to be your friend."
"I have never seen you before," said the dog. "Strangers do not give meat to dogs in the middle of the night for no reason. When a stranger is suddenly so kind, he usually wants something. So I am asking myself, what do you want?"
"Nothing! Nothing at all," said the thief quickly. "Just eat your meat and go to sleep, there's a good doggy."
"Go to sleep?" said the dog. "Now I understand. You want me to be quiet. You want to go into my master's house and take his things. I am sorry, but your meat has not closed my mouth. It has only opened my eyes. Now I am going to watch you more carefully than ever."
Then the dog lifted his head, and he barked as loudly as he could. "Woof! Woof! Woof!" The noise was terrible. A light came on in the house. The window opened, and the merchant looked out. "Who is there?" he shouted. Then the neighbors' lights came on too.
The thief turned around and ran down the dark road. He did not even stop to pick up his bag.
In the morning, the merchant found the meat on the ground. He understood what had happened. He patted the dog's head. "Good boy," he said. Then he gave him a big bone, and this time the dog ate it happily.
