Once upon a time there was a man and his wife who had too many children. So they took the three youngest girls into a wood and left them there.
The girls walked and walked, but they could not see a single house. It began to get dark, and they were very hungry. At last they saw a light and went toward it. It was a house. They knocked at the door, and a woman opened it.
"Please let us in and give us something to eat," said the girls. "I can't do that," said the woman. "My husband is a giant, and he will kill you when he comes home."
But the girls begged so hard that the woman let them in and gave them some bread and milk. But just as they began to eat, there was a great knock at the door, and a terrible voice said, "Fee, fie, fo, fum, I smell a human. Who is there, wife?" "Just three poor girls, cold and hungry," said his wife. "Don't touch them."
The giant said nothing. He ate a huge dinner and told the girls to stay the night. He had three daughters of his own, and the three strange girls had to sleep in the same bed with them.
The youngest of the strange girls was called Molly Whuppie, and she was very clever. Before they went to bed, she saw the giant put straw ropes around her neck and her sisters' necks. Around his own daughters' necks he put gold chains. Molly did not like this, so she stayed awake.
When everyone was asleep, she got out of bed quietly. She took the straw ropes off herself and her sisters and took the gold chains off the giant's daughters. Then she put the straw ropes on the giant's daughters and the gold chains on herself and her sisters, and lay down again.
In the middle of the night, the giant got up with a big club in his hand. In the dark he felt for the necks with straw ropes. Then he pulled those three girls out of the bed and carried them away. He did not know that they were his own daughters. Then he went back to bed, very pleased with himself.
Molly knew it was time to leave. She woke her sisters, told them to be quiet, and they slipped out of the house. They ran and ran all night, and in the morning they came to the king's palace.
Molly went in and told the king her story. "You are a clever girl, Molly," said the king. "If you bring me the giant's sword, my oldest son will marry your oldest sister."
So she went back to the giant's house and hid under the bed. When the giant began to snore, Molly reached over him and took down the sword. But it made a noise, and the giant jumped up.
Molly ran out of the door with the sword, and the giant ran after her. They ran and ran until they came to the Bridge of One Hair. Molly ran lightly across it, but the giant could not follow. "Bad luck to you, Molly Whuppie!" he shouted. "Never come here again!" "Twice more I'll come," said Molly. So her oldest sister married the king's oldest son.
"You have done well, Molly," said the king. "Now bring me the purse under the giant's pillow, and your second sister can marry my second son." Again Molly hid under the bed, and when the giant was snoring, she took the purse. He woke up and ran after her, but she got over the Bridge of One Hair, and he could not. "Once more I'll come," said Molly. So her second sister married the king's second son.
"Now, Molly," said the king, "if you bring me the ring on the giant's finger, you can marry my youngest son yourself." So Molly went back once more. When the giant was asleep, she pulled and pulled at the ring until it came off. But at that moment the giant woke up and caught her by the hand.
"Now I've got you, Molly Whuppie!" he said. "If you had caught me like this, what would you do with me?" Molly thought quickly. "I would put you in a sack with the cat and the dog and a needle, thread and shears," she said. "I would hang the sack on the wall. Then I would go to the wood, find the thickest stick and come home and hit the sack."
"Well, Molly," said the giant, "that is just what I'll do to you." So he put Molly in a sack with all those things, hung it on the wall and went to the wood to find a stick.
Then Molly began to sing, "Oh, if you could see what I see!" "What do you see, Molly?" asked the giant's wife. But Molly only sang the same words again. The wife wanted to see it so much that she begged Molly to let her into the sack.
So Molly cut a hole in the sack with the shears, jumped down and helped the giant's wife climb in. Then she sewed up the hole. The wife saw nothing and asked to get out, but Molly just hid behind the door.
The giant came home with a big stick and began to hit the sack. "Stop, it's me!" cried his wife. But the dog barked and the cat howled, and he could not hear her voice. Then he saw Molly running out of the door, and he ran after her.
They ran and ran until they came to the Bridge of One Hair. Molly got over, but the giant could not. "Bad luck to you, Molly Whuppie!" he shouted. "Never come again!" "Never again will I come," said Molly. She took the ring to the king and married his youngest son, and she never saw the giant again.
