Long ago there was a poor little boy named Dick Whittington. His father and mother had died, and he lived in a small village in the country. He was often hungry, and he had no shoes.
People in the village often talked about London. "It's a great city," they said. "All the people there are fine ladies and gentlemen, and the streets are paved with gold." Dick wished he could go there and pick up some of that gold.
One day a big wagon with eight horses came through the village. It was going to London. Dick asked the driver if he could walk beside it, and the driver kindly said yes. So Dick went to London.
But when he got there, he was very disappointed. The streets were not made of gold. They were covered with dirt. He walked around all day, and no one gave him any food. At night he slept in the street, cold and hungry.
At last he lay down at the door of a rich merchant named Mr. Fitzwarren. The cook came out and shouted, "Get away from here, you lazy boy!" But just then Mr. Fitzwarren came home. "Why are you lying here?" he asked. "I would like to work," said Dick, "but I'm too weak. I haven't eaten for three days." Mr. Fitzwarren felt sorry for him and told his servants to give him food. Then he gave Dick a job helping the cook.
Dick was happy to have work, but the cook was cruel. She shouted at him all day and often hit him with her spoon. Only Alice, Mr. Fitzwarren's kind daughter, was nice to him. Dick slept in a little room in the attic. There were so many rats and mice there that he could hardly sleep at night.
One day a gentleman gave Dick a penny for cleaning his shoes. Dick used it to buy a cat. After that, the rats and mice were gone, and Dick slept well every night. He loved his cat very much.
Some time later, Mr. Fitzwarren had a ship ready to sail to faraway countries to trade. He was a kind man, and he told all his servants to send something on the ship. "Perhaps you will get some money for it," he said. Everyone had something except Dick. "I have nothing but my cat," he said. "Then send your cat," said Mr. Fitzwarren. With tears in his eyes, Dick gave his cat to the captain.
The cook laughed at him. "Do you think your cat will make you rich?" she said, and she was crueler than ever. At last Dick could not stand it anymore. Early one morning he packed his things and ran away.
He walked as far as Holloway, outside the city, and sat down on a stone to rest. He did not know where to go. Just then, the church bells of Bow began to ring. They seemed to sing to him: "Turn again, Whittington, Lord Mayor of London!"
"Lord Mayor of London!" said Dick. "If I could be Lord Mayor and ride in a fine coach, I would put up with anything. I'll go back, and I won't mind the cook at all." So he went back, and he started work before the cook came down to the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Mr. Fitzwarren's ship was blown far away to the coast of Africa, to the country of Barbary. The king of that country invited the captain to dinner in his palace. But as soon as the food was put on the table, hundreds of rats and mice ran in and ate everything.
"Oh dear," said the king. "I would give half my treasure to anyone who could get rid of these rats." "I have just the animal for you," said the captain, and he went to get Dick's cat. The next day, when the rats came, the cat jumped on them. Soon most of them were dead, and the rest ran away. The king was so happy that he gave the captain ten times more gold for the cat than for everything else on the ship.
When the ship came home, the captain went to Mr. Fitzwarren with all the gold. "This belongs to Dick," he said. Some people said, "Dick is only a poor kitchen boy. You can keep the money for yourself." But Mr. Fitzwarren said, "No. It is his, every penny."
So they called Dick from the kitchen. He was dirty from work, and he thought they were laughing at him. But when he saw the gold, he was amazed. "Mr. Whittington," said the merchant, "you are now a richer man than I am." Dick gave presents to everyone in the house, even to the cruel cook.
Dick washed his face, put on fine clothes and became a handsome young gentleman. Alice had always liked him, and now she loved him. They were soon married, and they lived happily together. And just as the bells had said, Dick Whittington became Lord Mayor of London, not once, but three times.
