Today, the paintings of Vincent van Gogh are some of the most famous in the world. Millions of people visit museums to see his sunflowers and his starry skies. But when he was alive, almost nobody wanted his paintings. It is often said that he sold only one. In fact, he sold a few more, but very few.
Vincent was born in 1853 in a small village in the Netherlands. His father was a pastor. As a young man, Vincent tried many jobs. He worked for a company that sold paintings. He worked as a teacher in England. He also lived with poor coal miners in Belgium and tried to help them as a preacher. But none of these jobs went well.
When he was twenty-seven, Vincent decided to become an artist. He had almost no training, so he taught himself. He drew again and again. His early paintings were dark and brown. They showed farmers and workers with tired faces.
Vincent had a younger brother, Theo. Theo sold art in Paris, and he believed in Vincent. For years, he sent Vincent money every month. The brothers also wrote many letters to each other. More than six hundred of Vincent's letters to Theo still exist. In them, Vincent wrote about his ideas, his hopes and his troubles.
In 1886, Vincent moved to Paris to live with Theo. There he saw new kinds of art, and his colors became bright. He also fell in love with Japanese woodblock prints. He bought hundreds of them and even copied some, like the work of Hiroshige. He dreamed of a sunny place that was like Japan.
In 1888, he moved to Arles, a town in the south of France. The sun was strong, and the fields were yellow. Vincent painted very quickly, sometimes one painting a day. He painted sunflowers, wheat fields and his little yellow house. He hoped other artists would come and work with him. The painter Paul Gauguin came, but the two men often argued.
Vincent often had serious mental health problems. One night in December 1888, after a fight with Gauguin, he cut off part of his own ear. Later, he went to a hospital in a town called Saint-Remy. Even there, he kept painting. The view from his window gave him the idea for The Starry Night, one of his most famous works.
In July 1890, Vincent died. He was only thirty-seven. In about ten years, he had made more than two thousand works of art. Theo died just six months later. After that, Theo's wife, Jo, worked hard to show Vincent's paintings to the world.
Slowly, people began to understand Vincent's art. Today, his paintings are worth millions of dollars. But he never knew this. He did not paint to become rich or famous. He painted because he loved it.
Vincent's life teaches us something important. Your work may not be understood today. But if you keep going and put your heart into it, it can touch people for a very long time.
