In the year 1751, a young man named David Balfour left his village in Scotland. He was seventeen, and his father had just died. In his pocket was a letter from his father to his uncle, Ebenezer Balfour of the House of Shaws. "Your uncle will help you," the village minister told him.
But when people heard the name "Shaws," their faces changed. "Why do you want to go there?" one woman asked. And when David finally saw the house, his heart sank. It was huge, but half of it had never been finished. No smoke came from the chimneys, and many windows had no glass.
His uncle Ebenezer was a thin, bent old man with a mean face. He was a miser who loved money more than anything. He gave David a little cold porridge for dinner. When David said who his father was, the old man looked frightened. "Your father is dead?" he asked, and his hands began to shake.
On the second night, Uncle Ebenezer gave David a key. "Go up the stairs in the tower and bring me the box at the top," he said. It was a dark, stormy night, and there was no light in the tower. David climbed the stone stairs slowly, feeling the wall with his hand.
Suddenly lightning lit up the sky. David gasped. The stairs ended in the air! One more step, and he would have fallen to his death. His uncle had tried to kill him! David quietly came down and found the old man shaking with fear in the kitchen. "Why did you do it?" David asked. But his uncle would not answer.
The next morning, Ebenezer seemed kind. "Let us go to the town of Queensferry," he said. "We will see my lawyer, and I will give you your rights." At Queensferry they met Captain Hoseason of the ship Covenant. The captain invited David to look around his ship. But as soon as David was on board, someone hit him on the head. Everything went black.
When David woke up, he was in the dark bottom of the ship, and his head hurt terribly. He had been kidnapped! His uncle had paid the captain to take David to America and sell him as a worker on a farm there. Now David understood. His father had been the older brother, so the House of Shaws was really David's.
One foggy night, the Covenant hit a small boat and sank it. Only one man was saved. He was a short, quick man in a fine coat with silver buttons. His name was Alan Breck Stewart. Alan was a Highlander who had fought against King George, and he had a belt full of gold.
The captain and his men wanted Alan's gold. David heard them making a plan to kill him. He ran to tell Alan. "Will you stand with me?" asked Alan. "I will," said David. The two of them locked themselves in the little cabin called the round-house. When the sailors attacked, Alan fought like a lion with his sword, and David fired his pistols. At last the sailors ran away. "Am I not a fine fighter?" Alan laughed, and he hugged David.
Soon after that, the ship hit some rocks in a storm, and David was thrown into the sea. He reached a small island and lived there alone for four days, cold and hungry, eating shellfish. Then some fishermen passed in a boat and shouted something at him, laughing. At last David understood. When the sea went out, he could simply walk to the big island next to it! He felt very foolish.
David crossed the Highlands to find Alan. On a lonely road, a terrible thing happened. An important government man was shot dead right in front of him, and the soldiers thought David was one of the killers. As he ran into the woods, a hand pulled him behind the trees. It was Alan! "We must run," said Alan.
For many days and nights, David and Alan hid from the soldiers. They lay on hot rocks all day without water. They walked through the mountains at night and slept in the heather. David grew weak and sick. Once they had a terrible argument, and they almost fought with swords. But when David became too ill to walk, Alan helped him, and they became true friends again.
At last they reached the south. David visited a lawyer named Mr. Rankeillor, who had known his father. The lawyer believed David's story, and they made a clever plan. That night, Alan knocked on the door of the House of Shaws. David and the lawyer hid in the dark nearby.
"I have news about your nephew," Alan said to Ebenezer. "Some friends of mine found him alive. What do you want us to do with him? Shall we kill him, or keep him?" "Don't kill him!" said Ebenezer. "I only paid the captain to take him to America." Then David and the lawyer stepped out of the darkness. "Good evening, Uncle," said David. Ebenezer could say nothing at all.
The old man agreed to give David two-thirds of the money from the house and land every year. David was rich now. But when he said goodbye to Alan on a hill near Edinburgh, he did not feel happy at all. Alan had to escape to France. The two friends shook hands and walked away in different directions. And David felt very lonely in the busy streets of the city.
