A tourist from Spain walks into a small ramen shop in Kyoto. She speaks into her phone in Spanish, and a moment later the phone says, in clear Japanese, that she would like a bowl of ramen without pork. The owner replies in Japanese, and the phone answers her in Spanish. Neither of them knows a word of the other's language, yet the meal is ordered without trouble. Scenes like this, which would have seemed like science fiction twenty years ago, are now part of daily life. They lead many students to ask a reasonable question: if machines can translate for us, why should we spend years learning a foreign language?
The progress of machine translation has been remarkable. When Google Translate was launched in 2006, it worked mainly by comparing huge numbers of texts and calculating which words were likely to match, and its results were often strange. In 2016, Google switched to a system based on neural networks, a type of AI that learns patterns from enormous amounts of data, and the quality improved sharply. Other services, such as DeepL, which started in 2017, became popular for producing natural-sounding text. Today, Google Translate handles more than 240 languages and language varieties, including 110 that were added in a single year, 2024.
Translation is no longer limited to text typed into a computer. Smartphone apps can read a menu through the camera and show the translation on the screen, and some earphones can translate a conversation almost as it happens. In Japan, a national research institute developed a free speech translation app called VoiceTra, and translation devices are now a familiar sight at shops, stations, and city offices that serve visitors from abroad. In 2025, Japan welcomed a record number of overseas visitors, more than 42 million, and these tools have helped many of them get around.
For these reasons, some people argue that the age of required foreign language study is coming to an end. Learning a language well takes thousands of hours, they point out, and many learners never reach a high level anyway. That time could be spent on other subjects, such as mathematics, programming, or a student's own special interests. If a machine can handle a hotel reservation or a business email in seconds, it may be more efficient to let it do so. Some even predict that within a generation, learning a foreign language will become a hobby, like learning to play the piano, rather than a requirement. Supporters of this view also note that translation technology allows people who have few chances to study languages, such as elderly people or workers with long hours, to communicate across borders.
While these arguments are persuasive, there are good reasons to believe that language learning is far from finished. The first is accuracy. Machine translation works best for languages that have large amounts of text available online, such as English, French, and Chinese. According to W3Techs, a company that surveys websites, about half of the websites whose language it could identify in 2026 were in English, while many of the world's languages have very little online text. For such languages, the quality of machine translation can still be poor, and even for major languages, mistakes are not rare.
Japanese presents special challenges. Japanese speakers often leave out the subject of a sentence, so a machine must guess whether a sentence such as "Eki ni itta" means "I went to the station," "She went to the station," or something else. Japanese also has many levels of politeness, and choosing the wrong level can make a speaker sound rude or strangely distant. A person who understands the situation can usually make the right choice, but a machine may not know who is speaking to whom. Some expressions are even harder. The common Japanese phrase "yoroshiku onegaishimasu" has no simple equivalent in English, and its meaning changes depending on whether it is said at a first meeting, at the end of an email, or when asking for a favor.
In some situations, small mistakes can have serious results. A wrong word in a medical explanation, a legal contract, or a safety warning could cause real harm. AI systems have also been shown to sometimes produce smooth, confident sentences that are simply wrong, and because the translation sounds natural, the error can be hard to notice. This leads to an ironic problem: the person who is best able to check a machine translation is someone who already knows both languages well.
There are practical concerns as well. Translation apps need batteries, and many of them need an internet connection, which may not be available during a disaster or in remote areas. Translation also takes a moment, which can make a fast, lively conversation feel slow and stiff. In addition, when people type private information, such as medical records or business secrets, into an online translator, that information may be stored on a company's computers. For this reason, some companies limit how their workers use free translation services.
Language is also more than a tool for exchanging information. When people speak to each other directly, they share jokes, feelings, and small signs of friendship that are easily lost through a machine. Many people who have lived abroad say that they began to feel at home only when they could chat with their neighbors in the local language. Learning a language also means learning about the culture and ways of thinking behind it, which can help us see our own culture from a new angle.
Some researchers also argue that learning another language is good exercise for the brain, although scientists still disagree about how large such effects are. Even if the benefits for the brain are smaller than some people once believed, the experience of struggling with a new language teaches patience. It also gives learners respect for people who must live and work in a language that is not their own.
外国語を学ぶことは脳のよい運動になる、と主張する研究者もいます。ただし、その効果がどれくらい大きいのかについては、科学者の間でもまだ意見が分かれています。たとえ脳への効果が、かつて一部で信じられていたほど大きくなかったとしても、新しい言葉に苦労して取り組む経験は、忍耐力を育ててくれます。また、自分の母語ではない言葉で暮らし、働かなければならない人たちへの敬意も生まれます。
Of course, supporters of machine translation may answer that the technology will keep improving. Problems that seem serious today, such as mistakes in politeness or missing subjects, may be solved within a few years, just as earlier problems were. It is also true that not everyone needs a high level of a foreign language. For a tourist on a short trip, a translation app may be all that is necessary.
もちろん、機械翻訳を支持する人たちは、技術はこれからも進歩し続けると反論するかもしれません。ていねいさのまちがいや主語の省略のように、今は深刻に見える問題も、かつての問題と同じように、数年のうちに解決されるかもしれません。また、誰もが高いレベルの外国語力を必要としているわけではないのも事実です。短い旅行に行く人なら、翻訳アプリさえあれば十分かもしれません。
Many educators therefore take a middle position. They suggest that the goal of language education may need to change rather than disappear. Instead of spending most of their time memorizing word lists and translating sentences, students could focus more on speaking, understanding culture, and checking and improving machine translations. Some teachers already let students use translation tools in class and then ask them to find and correct the mistakes. Others worry that if students depend on these tools too early, they will never build the basic skills that are needed to judge the results.
Schools and governments are still searching for the right balance. In 2023, Japan's Ministry of Education published guidelines on the use of generative AI in schools, which gave examples of both helpful and inappropriate uses. For instance, using AI to get ideas or to check one's own writing may be acceptable, while handing in a machine's work as one's own is not. Many teachers say that the key question is not whether students use the tools, but whether they are still thinking for themselves.
Learners who understand a language can also use machine translation more wisely. One simple technique is to translate a sentence into English and then translate the result back into Japanese. If the meaning changes along the way, the translation probably needs to be fixed. Of course, this method only works well when the user knows enough of both languages to notice the difference, which is another reason why language skills remain valuable.
言葉がわかる学習者は、機械翻訳をもっと賢く使うこともできます。かんたんな方法の一つは、文をいったん英語に訳し、その結果をもう一度日本語に訳し直してみることです。途中で意味が変わっていれば、その訳はおそらく直す必要があります。もちろん、この方法がうまくいくのは、使う人がそのちがいに気づけるくらい、両方の言葉を知っている場合だけです。これもまた、語学力が今も価値をもつ理由の一つです。
A useful comparison may be the calculator. Calculators did not make mathematics education unnecessary, but they did change what students practice. In the same way, machine translation may change which language skills are most valuable. Simple tasks may be left to machines, while skills such as building relationships, understanding cultural background, and judging whether a message is truly appropriate may become even more important. After all, a calculator is useful only to a person who understands what the numbers mean, and the same may be true of translation.
What do you think? Some people say that foreign language study will no longer be necessary, because AI translation is fast, cheap, and improving every year. Others say that it will still be important, because machines make mistakes and cannot replace the trust and understanding that come from speaking to someone in their own language.
あなたはどう思いますか。外国語の学習はもう必要なくなる、と言う人もいます。AI翻訳は速くて安く、年々よくなっているからです。一方、外国語の学習はこれからも大切だ、と言う人もいます。機械はまちがえることがあり、相手の言葉で話すことで生まれる信頼や理解の代わりにはなれないからです。
