Otakiage is the respectful burning of old charms, talismans and other objects that people feel they shouldn't just throw away. Many people return their omamori, or good luck charms, to a shrine or temple after about a year, often around New Year. The priests burn them in a fire or arrange for them to be burned later. The idea is to say thank you and send them off properly.

Otakiage is a ritual burning held at Japanese shrines and temples. People bring things they feel they shouldn't throw out with the trash, especially old omamori, or charms, and ofuda, paper talismans from a shrine. Many people buy a new charm each year and return the old one, often at New Year, when shrines set up a box for old charms near the entrance.

The items are later burned in a sacred fire, sometimes in a big bonfire in mid-January called dondo-yaki in many areas. The idea is to thank the charm for its protection and send it off with respect. Some temples also hold memorial services for dolls, letters and photos.

The rules are flexible. Many places accept charms from other shrines, but some don't, and it's polite to return shrine items to a shrine and temple items to a temple. Plastic and metal are often not accepted. I like the custom because it treats even small things with care.

Q

Can I just throw my old omamori in the trash?

There's no law against it, but most people feel uncomfortable doing that. Returning it to a shrine or temple is the usual way. If you can't, some people wrap it in white paper with a pinch of salt before throwing it out.

Q

Do I have to return it to the same shrine?

That's ideal, but not required. Many shrines accept charms from other shrines. It's best to return shrine charms to a shrine and temple charms to a temple, and to check the sign at the box.

Q

Do I need to pay?

For a few charms, usually not, but many people leave a small offering. For larger items, like dolls or many objects, temples and shrines often ask for a fee.
