Itsukushima Shrine, on the island of Miyajima near Hiroshima, is the one built out over the sea, with a vermilion gate standing in the water. Most people assume the design is for the view. The usual explanation is different: the island itself was regarded as sacred, so ordinary people were not supposed to set foot on its ground.
Building the shrine over the tidal flat meant worshippers could approach without standing on the island. The same thinking is why, historically, births and burials were not permitted on the island. The gate is about sixteen meters high and is not fixed into the seabed; it stands under its own weight, with stones packed into the box at the top.
It went through its first major restoration in about seventy years, starting in 2019 and finishing in 2022, so for three and a half years visitors arrived to find it wrapped in scaffolding. Practical advice: check the tide times before you go. The shrine at high tide and the shrine at low tide are two completely different experiences, and most people want the first.

厳島神社は1996年12月に世界文化遺産に登録された。現在の社殿の形は平清盛の造営によるものとされ、寝殿造の様式を海上に展開している。大鳥居は高さ約16.6メートルで、木造の鳥居としては日本最大級。海底に埋め込まれておらず、自重と、屋根部分に詰めた石の重みで立つ。主柱にはクスノキが使われ、腐りにくく浮力に耐える性質が選ばれた理由とされる。2019年6月から約70年ぶりとなる大規模な保存修理が行われ、2022年に足場が外された。島では古くから出産と埋葬が忌まれ、本土側で行う慣習があった。
