On August 6th, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, detonating above the city at 8:15 in the morning. The area beneath it was destroyed. Rather than rebuilding the district, the city laid out a park there, completed in 1955 to a design by the architect Kenzo Tange. The Atomic Bomb Dome, a ruined building left standing, is at its northern end.

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park sits in the middle of the city, on the ground that was destroyed when an atomic bomb was dropped on the morning of August 6th, 1945. The bomb detonated at 8:15, about six hundred meters above the ground. Hiroshima's own survey records around one hundred and forty thousand deaths by the end of that December, and estimates differ depending on how they are counted.

The city chose not to rebuild this district, and the park was completed in 1955 to a design by the architect Kenzo Tange. He aligned the museum, the cenotaph and the Atomic Bomb Dome on one axis, so that standing at the cenotaph you look through an arch straight at the ruin.

That ruin was a prefectural exhibition hall from 1915, about a hundred and fifty meters from the point above which the bomb exploded. Keeping it was argued over for years, since many survivors found it unbearable to look at. It was listed as a World Heritage site in 1996. If you go, the museum is heavy and honest, and most people need time afterwards.

QIs it appropriate for me to visit as a foreign tourist?

Yes. The park and museum exist to be seen, and visitors from every country come. Behave as you would at any memorial: quiet, no eating, and think about whether a photograph of yourself is the right thing in a given spot.

QWhy was the ruined building kept?

It was debated for years. Some survivors wanted it demolished because seeing it was painful; others argued it was the only way to show what happened. A fundraising campaign in the 1960s led to preserving it, and it has been reinforced several times since.

QWhat are the paper cranes?

Folded paper cranes left at the children's monument. They are connected to Sadako Sasaki, a girl who developed leukemia after the bombing and folded cranes while ill. Schools across Japan and abroad send them, and they are collected and displayed.

MYTHThe park was simply left as it was after the bombing.
