Origami means folding paper into a shape using only folds: no scissors, no glue, and traditionally a single square sheet. Almost every Japanese child learns the crane. What is less known abroad is that origami is taken seriously by mathematicians and engineers, and folding techniques have been used to design solar panels and medical devices.

Origami is folding paper into shapes, and the rules are strict: no cutting, no glue, and traditionally one square sheet. Every Japanese child learns to fold a paper crane, usually around the age of six, and it stays in the hands for life. The crane carries a particular weight here.

There is a tradition that folding a thousand of them is an act of prayer, and strings of a thousand cranes are sent to people who are ill and left at war memorials, a practice strongly associated with Sadako Sasaki, a girl who died of leukemia caused by the Hiroshima bomb.

What surprises people is the technical side. Origami has become a field of mathematics, and the folding patterns have real engineering uses: compact ways of packing a large flat surface into a small space have been applied to solar arrays and to devices that must go into the body through a small opening.

QWhy a thousand cranes?

The crane is said in Japanese tradition to live a thousand years, and folding a thousand is understood as a sustained act of prayer. The association with wishing for recovery became widespread in the postwar period.

QIs cutting really not allowed?

In the modern purist convention, no. Older Japanese paper folding did sometimes include cuts, and there is a historical book of cut-and-fold cranes. The no-cutting rule is a later standard.

QCan adults do it seriously?

Very much so. Complex origami by designers like Robert Lang involves dozens of hours and hundreds of folds, and international conventions and competitions exist.
