If you see a mass of tiny colored paper cranes on strings, in a hospital room or at a war memorial, that is a senbazuru, a thousand cranes. The crane in Japan is a symbol of long life, said in an old phrase to live a thousand years, and folding a thousand of them is understood as a wish made at the cost of real effort, which is the point: a class, a team or a family folds them together, so what is given is other people's time.
They are given to someone facing illness or an operation, hung at shrines, and carried to Hiroshima. The association with peace comes from Sadako Sasaki, who was two when the bomb fell on Hiroshima, developed leukemia ten years later, and folded cranes in hospital before her death in 1955.
Her classmates campaigned for a monument, and the Children's Peace Monument in Hiroshima was completed in 1958. Cranes still arrive there from schools around the world in such quantity that the city has had to find ways to store and recycle them, which is worth knowing before mailing a box.
病室や慰霊の場で、色とりどりの小さな折り鶴が糸で束ねられているのを見かけたら、それが千羽鶴です。鶴は日本では長寿の印で、千年生きるという古い言い方があります。千羽折るということは、実際の労力を払って願うということで、そこが肝心です。

Not always. Some hospitals restrict what can be brought in, and some patients find the expectation of recovery heavy. It is normal to ask the family first.
いつもではありません。持ち込みを制限する病院がありますし、回復を期待されること自体を重く感じる人もいます。先に家族に尋ねるのがふつうです。
QShould I send cranes to Hiroshima?
広島に鶴を送ってもよいですか。
You can, and the city accepts them, but the volume is a genuine problem and there are guidelines on how to send them. Checking the city's instructions first is better than simply mailing a box.
送れますし、市も受け付けています。ただし量が実際に問題になっており、送り方の案内があります。まず市の案内を確かめるのがよいです。

佐々木禎子さんは1943年生まれで、1945年の広島の原爆投下時は二歳、1955年に白血病で亡くなった。同級生らの運動によって1958年に広島平和記念公園に原爆の子の像が建てられ、その周囲には今も折り鶴が絶えない。広島市には全国や海外から年間に数トン規模の折り鶴が届き、保存・展示や再生紙への利用が行われている。「鶴は千年、亀は万年」という言い方が、千という数の背景にあるとされる。
