Urashima Taro is the Japanese folk tale that ends worst, and every child knows it. A young fisherman rescues a turtle that children are tormenting on the beach. In thanks the turtle takes him down to the Dragon Palace under the sea, where a princess entertains him with feasts and dancing fish.
After three days he grows homesick and asks to leave. She gives him a lacquered box and tells him never to open it. Back on shore, the village is unrecognisable and nobody has heard of him: three hundred years have passed. Alone, he opens the box, white smoke rises, and he becomes an old man on the spot.
Japanese people use the phrase Urashima state for the feeling of returning after a long absence to find everything changed, after a hospital stay, a posting overseas, or prison. What I find most striking is that the story offers no moral. He was kind, and this is what happened.
浦島太郎は、日本の昔話でいちばん後味の悪い終わり方をする話で、子どもは誰でも知っています。若い漁師が、浜で子どもにいじめられていた亀を助けます。礼として亀は彼を海の底の竜宮へ連れて行き、乙姫がごちそうと魚の踊りでもてなします。
三日たって里心がつき、帰りたいと言うと、乙姫は漆の箱を渡し、決して開けるなと言います。浜に戻ると村は見知らぬ姿で、誰も彼を知りません。三百年が過ぎていました。一人になった彼が箱を開けると白い煙が立ち、その場で老人になります。
日本人は、長く離れて戻ったら何もかも変わっていた感覚を「浦島状態」と言います。入院のあと、海外赴任のあと、刑務所を出たあと。私がいちばん胸を突かれるのは、この話に教訓がないことです。彼は親切にした。そして、こうなった。

Not a clear one, which is part of why it stays with people. Some read it as a warning about curiosity, some about leaving home, and some say it is simply about time being unrecoverable.
はっきりしたものはありません。だからこそ残るのだと思います。好奇心への戒めと読む人、故郷を離れることへの話と読む人、単に時は戻らないという話だと言う人がいます。

Very. Versions appear in eighth-century records including the Nihon Shoki and the Manyoshu, and in a regional gazetteer. The box that ages him is a later addition; the earliest versions differ.
非常に古いです。8世紀の『日本書紀』や『万葉集』、風土記に異なる形で現れます。開けると老いる箱は後の形で、最も古い話は筋が違います。

Being out of touch after time away. Someone back from a long assignment abroad who does not know the new prices, phones or slang will say it about themselves, usually with a laugh.

浦島の話は『日本書紀』雄略天皇22年の条、『万葉集』巻九の長歌、『丹後国風土記』逸文などに原型が見え、8世紀にはすでに知られていた。古い形では、女は亀ではなく神女とされ、地上に戻ったのちの年月も異なる。玉手箱を開けて老いる結末が定着するのは後世で、室町時代の御伽草子を経て、明治の教科書で今の形になった。京都府伊根町の浦嶋神社など、浦島を祀る社が各地にある。「浦島状態」は現代語として定着し、長く離れていて事情に疎いことを指す。
