Enmusubi literally means tying a bond, and although most people today use it to talk about romantic matchmaking, the original idea is broader: it covers any fated connection between people, whether that's a marriage, a close friendship, or even a good business relationship. A number of Shinto shrines around Japan have built a reputation specifically around enmusubi, selling charms meant to bring good relationships and offering ema, small wooden plaques where visitors write a wish, often about love, hoping the shrine's deity will help it come true.
Some of these shrines feature things like two trees that have grown together over centuries, or a pair of connected rocks, which visitors treat as physical symbols of enmusubi and popular spots for photos. Personally, I like that the concept isn't limited to couples, since it gives a name to something a bit vaguer that most languages don't really have a single word for: the sense that some relationships in your life were simply meant to happen.
